It's only happened this year, and we can't remember how long we've had it, and it's three different plants in one pot so we can save space. Is this a health problem we should be looking out for? We also have a cat and a dog, but they won't bother going after it.

The fungus in question is "Leucocoprinus birnbaumii;" a.k.a. yellow houseplant mushroom. Apparently, the yellow color of this particular species is distinctive.

L. birnbaumii can be mildly toxic, if you try to eat it; but handling, or just having it around should not cause any problems. Contrary to what Mikecraig said, most of the sources I read said that the fungus is harmless to the plant; and may in fact live symbiotically with the roots, providing it with nutrients.....

There is no real way to get rid of this mushroom, short of removing all the soil and washing the roots of the plant, and even then there is no guarantee.......You might as well enjoy the mushroom as a curiousity, or just learn to live with it.

Good luck,

Yeah, that's root fungus. comes from too much water for too long a time in that plant pot. You should remove ALL of the yellow stuff. Dig it out with a spoon or something. really you should do that and also repot the plants with some new potting soil. Between waterings, you just need to make sure the soil pretty much dries out completely and then water again. It's probably with more plants in there to save space, like you say, it's just been a little too soggy.
It is absolutely no health concern for you or your pets. However, if untreated, your house plants are goners.

Excess sweating could result in the urine becoming a deeper yellow. Also, it is a sign that you have not been drinking enough liquids. Finally, have you ever noticed when taking a multi vitamin, or perhaps a vitamin b supplementation pill, your urine-changed color? This is due to riboflavin. Riboflavin is a fluorescent yellow compound. Ingestion of this will most likely induce a change in urine color, to light yellow/bright orange. Also, small amounts of vitamin b2 are secreted in the feces, causing a yellowish color. But if in doubt seek professional help such has your GP or a pharmacist.

The mushrooms are probably no threat to the plants, but if they make you nervous then by all means remove them.
