Catholic priests are supposed remain chaste. Meaning, they take a vow of celebacy (sp). They offer their chastity to God. Seriously, as a Catholic, it's SOOO beautiful and amazing to see these priests that are SO devoted to God!!!
Pope John Paul II wrote 'Theology of the Body'...if you read that, you might be able to better understand how priests remain chaste.
Those who take religious vows take the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. We like to joke that those are the vows of 'no money, no honey, and a boss'. ROFL
As a young woman of 15 interested in religious life, I'll have you know that it is hard...but, if following God's plan for me means remaining a virgin (yes, I'm 15 and a virgin...shocking nowadays, no?) for the rest of my life, then I am MORE than happy to adher to His will, because I know I will be rewarded someday in Heaven (God permitting)! Isn't God awesome???

Hope this helps!

God Bless,

InLoveWithCHRIST!!!

Catholic priests are called to celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom, and are preferred to have always been so. However, there are examples of priests who had led sinful lives before conversion and now lead celibate lives. So virginity is preferred but not required. Priests who convert as married men from other denominations of Christianity are expected to remain married (with all the priveleges and beautiful things therein), but not remarry if their spouse dies. Also, a note: Orthodoxy requires celibacy of the Bishops, and honors celibate priests, but does not require celibacy. And your order is backwards. Jewish rabbis and non-Catholic Christian ministers are expected to be chaste, meaning no sex until marriage. I know it's backwards in contemporary society, but the high hope is that a couple approaching the altar to marry have never had sex.

Roman Catholic priests are called to be celibate. Celibacy in this respect means unmarried. All unmarried Christians are called to be sexually pure, that is, to not engage in any sexual activity.

I have known of one Catholic priest who had been married, had a son and then became a priest later. I knew his son who also became a priest.

The answer to your question is no, they are not required to be virgins, although most probably are because most of them are called to the priesthood in early adolescence.

No. They only take the vow of chastity and abstinence after they enter the priesthood and become ordained.

What they did prior, if they had premarital sex, they could get forgiveness for their sin, and still go on to becoming a priest.

The same goes for nuns, they do not need to be virgins, just take their vow of abstinence and from that point on.

I am a devote catholic and well the priest doesn't HAVE to be a virgin before he becomes a priest they must practice abstinence from that point forward.

No.

Catholic priests, religious brothers, and religious sisters (nuns) take a vow of chastity not virginity.

Many men and women whose spouses have died take this vow when they become priests, brothers, and sisters as another step in their journey of faith.

With love in Christ.

They don't have to be, however need to be celibate once they are priests, if they are Roman Catholic. However, other rites of Catholicism allow married priests, so that doesn't apply.

Not necessarily. They could have had sex before they became priests. Priests are asked to take a vow of celibacy after they become priests.
