The first thing is they had nothing to fear from a snake or any animal or plant in that garden.

Second, we have no idea what a perfect human is capable of understanding. Maybe talking to the animals is not just a song.

Since it was a spirit creature actually controlling things, Satan could manage it. That is in his power range.

They didn't own the serpent; God created it (for some odd reason) and Satan spoke through it (God created Satan too. Hmm....I wonder why.) to tempt Eve with the apple.
