would you write New York, NY, or would you use the name of the borough you were born in.

My dad and I were both born in the Bronx, although I never lived there.

I always list my place of birth as New York, NY and my dad always writes Bronx, NY. He says that only people born in Manhattan should write New York, NY. At first I thought that he was associating the mailing address with place of birth, but he says it's not that. He says people who grow up in NYC wouldn't list their birthplace as New York, NY unless they were born in Manhattan.

Maybe it's a matter of hometown pride for him?

So, what do others born in NYC do?

When the form asks for "place of birth", I write Brooklyn, New York; when the form asks for "city of birth" I write NYC - that's the "city" I was born in.

It probably is a matter of pride. You are both right. It also matters on the form. If it's a written form you can do it, but I encountered an e-form that wouldn't let you use a borough as a city. No matter how hard I tried to write in Queens, it made me say New York, NY. Technically, I guess the correct answer is NY, NY, but Dad does have a feel for the way lots of people think.

Well, I would write Bronx, NY because that is how your address would read, just like Brooklyn, NY and Staten Island, NY. Only Manhattan adresses are New York, NY Queens goes by the city not Queens, NY it would be Flushing, NY or Bayside, NY.

The Bronx is a borough of New York City, but it's also a city on its own. If you were born in Manhattan, you should write, New York, NY.

You wont get in trouble for writing NY, NY, however the correct way is to write Bronx, NY. And yes your father is right, only ht epeople that were born in Manhattan would write their city of birht as Ney York, NY.

Depends but mostly they are looking for the city and that would be NewYork,NY. if you want to break it down further you can add the boro but I think it is a pride thing because The Bronx has a bad rep of sorts in the rest of the city.

Yikes, I don't believe so many folks on this board believe that New York, New york refers to Manhattan. New York City is accurate if you were born in any of the five boroughs.

The boroughs are not separate cities, they're separate *counties*.

You're both right -- you were born in the county of Bronx and the City of New York.
