Must you think of it as defense! That man is explaining his/her point of view to you. They want to tell or inform you of what you know not, or don't understand. It doesn't have to be a defense.
Ever thought about it that way! :-)

We have the account were Jesus tells the parable of the talents. The one who buried his talent did not do anything bad, like lie or steal,He was guilty of doing nothing at all.He was an "unprofitable servant" for this he was cast into the lake of fire,Matthew 25:14-30.When God gives us something so precious as He did,He expects us to do something with it.We were not just put here so that His son could die for our sins.We also have the commission that Christ gave us to "go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" Mark 16:15.Timothy was charged by God and the Apostle Paul to "Preach the word;be instant in season, out of season;reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" 2 Timothy 4:2.

" But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear" ( 1 Peter 3:15). This verse calls for a readied commitment to Jesus as Lord that is ALWAYS ready to speak for Him and to explain His Word. But, you should know God's Word before you try to teach it, for our every word is accountable before God.

It is the individual ego which either attacks or defends any belief. God is above all beliefs.

when one thinks that he or she holds a faith that cannot be defended by reason then he turns to violence. Jesus was not violent nor did He teach violence, The truth is self evident it needs no bombs or cutting of throats to make it be believed.

When you are delusional, it's comforting to find others suffering from the same delusion. It's painful to meet people that try to explain that your delusions are...delusions.
