what is the difference between respirdal and antidepressants?

Risperdal is an Atypical-Antipsychotic. It blocks dopamine in the brain and increases the level of this chemical in the pre-frontal cortex.

Risperdal's main indications are schizophrenia and Bi-polar mania.

The drug is strong and should be used with caution. Doctors will use it off label in some cases.

It can help depression. But to be honest it should be step 50 on the list of depression. There are many other things to try first.

SSRI's, SNRI's, Wellbutrin, MAOI's, mood Stabilizers etc.

Anti-depressants are a different form of drug. Each has their own chemical make-up and effect the brain in a different way.

The best person to decide on medication is a psychiatrist; if you're not being seen by one, do insist that your doctor refers you to one immediately.

Some of the more modern antidepressants work really well; in particular, you could ask about Cymbalta, and Effexor (Venlafaxine)

In both cases, it's important to be on a dose that works for you; mine had to be increased three times. So again, a psychiatrist really is the best person to help.
