HEBREW 4:
1Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.[a] 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,
"So I declared on oath in my anger,
'They shall never enter my rest.' "[b] And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."[c] 5And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."

1. the promise of resting in Him pulls us on to God's goal for us. We have to be careful that were not disqualified.
2. We have received the same promises as those people in the wilderness, but with them the promises didn't do them a bit of good because they didn't receive them with faith
3. If we do believe we will experience that state of resting, but if we don't have faith, we have to remember what God said, "Exasperated, I vowed, They'll never get where they're going, never be able to sit down and rest.'"
God made the vow, even though He'd finished His part before the foundation of the world. Somewhere it's written, "God rested the seventh day, having completed His work," but in this other text has not yet been fulfilled. Those earlier ones never did get to the place of rest because they were disobedient. God keeps renewing the promise and setting the day as today, just as He did in David's Psalm, centuries later than the original invitation:
"Today, please listen, don't turn a deaf ear.

Most of this is from the Message Bible I know its not in my words but it explains it pretty good I think.

In my KJV, Hebrews 4:1-Reads - 1- Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

If you read further...
Hebrews 4:10-12
10- For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11- Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
12-For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper then any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I believe this explains it.

it reminds me of Matt 7:21-23and Luke 13:25-27 . if we pick up our cross and follow after Jesus and not of the world and do gods commands we will enter his rest . now rest means for me that my faith in his son Jesus Christ my savor died for me and that there is nothing that can knock me down no matter how hard the winds blow for my feet are planted in good soil and my roots run deep so if the sun burns my leaves but my roots are in the spring of water deep underneath . i might look defeated but inside I'm sustained with the water of life waiting for god to send a cloud to cover the sun so i can Bloom once again for his glory . and even if i die every one that knows me knows that if i die then i finished what the lord almighty sent me here on earth to do and i finished building my part on a another mans foundation study Matthew 7 : 13-27

Again, salvation is more than a " confession." This verse and several others warn that if a Christian ceases to stop living the life that made them free, if they refrain from being obedient and to persevere in the faith then they will FAIL to reach the eternal promised land of rest.

It means that HEARING the word of God is not enough, you must have the FAITH to believe in it. You must LIVE that faith as well.

The Jewish nation had denied Jesus - so they could not enter into God's "rest" in His Kingdom.

Do not struggle with your self-effort to obey the law to make yourself righteous and therefore qualify yourselves for God's blessings. Jesus Christ has fulfilled the law for us so that we do not need to obey it to have God's righteousness and all His blessings in Jesus which we have received by grace. We should rest on the finished work of Jesus by believing on His promises and speaking them by faith into being.

God`s rest is eternal joy in Heaven but many will never choose this and so it seems that there are two kinds of people, those who say to God,`Thy will be done` and those to whom God say`s,`` Alright then you have it your way``.

I think you`re presenting this a little bit out of context. One has to start reading Hebrew: 3 to first understand why God was angry....and you have to read a little further and you'll find explanation concerning the rest.

I don't know what to make of that, but God is there for all who will come to Him. Perhaps it is referring to the ones who, once have heard His word, will not believe and come to Him.
