"Almighty God: We make our earnest prayer that
Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy
protection: that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the
citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and
obediance to government, and entertain a brotherly
affection and love for one another and for their
fellow citizens of the United States at large.
And finally that thou wilt most graciously be
pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love
mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity,
humility, and pacific temper of mind which were
the characteristics of the Divine Author of our
blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of
whose example in these things we can never hope
to be a happy nation.
Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

~ George Washington

I, too, am a Free Mason, and I don't know what point you are trying to make by stating that George Washington was.
The Masonic Bible is the NT.

Free Masons and the lodges of Free Masons are not a religion and never have been.

I don't see him saying it is a Christian Nation in that.

Your quote shows only that George Washington believed in and prayed to God and believed in Christ. Personal convictions of a leader do not prove anything about the lead.

It could also be pointed out that others that where involved with the founding of the USA where not christian, and that all agreed that it was very necessary to keep government and religion separate.

We are not a Christian nation, we are a nation of many beliefs, Christianity is just in the majority for now. Islam and Paganism in its many forms are the two fastest growing religions in the country.

George Washington also did not believe everything religion spouted either. He pointedly left his Episcopalian services right at the start of communion because he did not believe in that part of the service.

George Washington was also a Freemason and it was the masons who put together his first inauguration and Washington took his oath on a Masonic bible.

This is a secular nation made by fore-fathers who were smart enough not to let their religion influence their politics. I wish politicians of today were a quarter as smart as that.

To messers Nehemiah Dodge, Ephraim Robbins, & Stephen S. Nelson, a committee of the Danbury Baptist association in the state of Connecticut.

Gentlemen

The affectionate sentiments of esteem & approbation which you are so good as to express towards me, on behalf of the Danbury Baptist association, give me the highest satisfaction. my duties dictate a faithful & zealous pursuit of the interests of my constituents, and in proportion as they are persuaded of my fidelity to those duties, the discharge of them becomes more & more pleasing.

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man & his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state. [Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorised only to execute their acts, I have refrained from presenting even occasional performances of devotion presented indeed legally where an Executive is the legal head of a national church, but subject here, as religious exercises only to the voluntary regulations and discipline of each respective sect.] Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.

I reciprocate your kind prayers for the protection and blessing of the common Father and creator of man, and tender you for yourselves and your religious association, assurances of my high respect & esteem.

Not everyone in America is Christian. Because Religion is a private matter, and because this is a Free Country founded on Liberty, we each have the right to choose our own religion, or none at all. The founding fathers may have been Christian, but I think they would gladly have defended the rights of all religions. There is room in America for everyone, and one particular religion should not be deemed more Patriotic than any other.

Many of the founders of our nation were Christian. But the society we live in now is post-Christian.

The Ten Commandments and most Christian tenets were acceptable to most in society or they did not care back in the 1700's. The Enlightenment played off those Christian sympathies and expanded them in a humanistic manner.

Washington was, at most, an Episcopalian. But most reports state that he rarely attended church and never took communion. Most reports say he was a deist and a free mason.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

We are not a "Christian Nation." We are a nation with a majority of Christians.
