It certainly can be. It seems the mentally insane are drawn to religion. Those people who murder their children often say God told them to do it. People who are abusive to their spouse or children often do it in the name of religion. People who hear voices often say it is God. We read about these cases all the time. On a smaller level, perhaps you know of some religious people who impose all manner of restrictions and punishments on their family in the name of their religion. I do. Religion in and of itself is problematic. Faith, on the other hand is another thing and quite safe to submit to.

Of course it is. It's followers also mangae to practice just about every other abuse known to humans, too. Lying, decption, theft, assault (physical, sexual, mental and emotional), murder... basically the whole lot.

Deliberately getting people to believe in something that is not real, and then using that being as a reason to take a tenth of their earnings, shun them if they don't toe the line, force them to marry within the faith, break up families, kill in the name of their fantasy deity, have their children sexually abused by elders/priests and every other act of perversion and evil religions condone has to be categorised as mental abuse. If a sports club did it they would be shut down and the leadership would rot in gaol.

When a person suffers from delusion, he's mentally ill.
When a group of people suffer from that delusion in god, they call it religion. So actually, religion is a hidden mental sickness which the followers will never admit. Makes them more sick.
So, yes, it is a form of mental abuse.

Omg! Yes it is! (And so is the Government!) Anyway, I believe this because I feel so much of my life was spent studying religion and not being taught how to live a quality life and being happy and enjoying it. Now it's really hard for me to be happy for anyone else because of some of the horrible experiences I've been through. I'm tired of being forgiving of people because of how they where "raised" or their beliefs. And I'm tired of being under attack or held hostage because I don't believe there is a God. Yes, I'm bitter and meaner and in misery because I put my trust and based my life on something that wasn't real. Everyone wants something to believe, a purpose! And I'm tired of people just telling me to get over it.
(I just look at the Bible, Karon, as a script, ficition a reference for creative material..that's all nothing more..nothing less!)

For some it is. Religion can be abused in a family situation. Two very strict fundamentalist parents can and do use it as such.

Of course it is. For those poor buggers that are forced into from childhood, that is child abuse. The threat of an eternal hell for not following a fictional "god" is evil.

Followers are often mentally unstable. If you heard voices and had hallucinations you would be sectioned and put into psychiatric care. However, if its in the name of religion thats ok - wtf!

Great question. I think it depend on the religion. Some can be helpful and others can be not so helpful.
