There's a lot of differences. Most obvious are, we (British) use U's where you don't, things like "colour" instead of "color", and S instead of Z sometimes, such as "Realise" instead of "Realize"

i always think the most obvious difference is the accent, the American accent is harsh to the ears, where as the received pronunciation of the British accent is softer i feel. hehe
seriously not a great deal for the most part.
english and americans and for that matter australians and new zealanders understand each other perfectly. there are a few words that can cause some amusement, pants in amercian are trousers in english, pants in english are underwear. and a few spellings are differnt as detailed above

If by anerican you mean the USA, then the answer is that they speak a dialect, whereas the British speak english

There are many differences. Spend some time in both countries and you'll definitely notice. Americans tend to "dumb down" the English language, so the American vocabulary is smaller, generally shorter words are used, spelling is simplified, etc.
I know some people don't want to hear that, but it's absolutely true.
