what is a roman blind - vertical slats or horizontal?

Hi, do you see roman any where in the words slats or vertical. The homes in Rome propably use slats or verticals. I guess they have roman blinds.

Roman blinds are horizontal, fabric colored 'slats'.
I used to call them 'tanned caterpillar hides'.
They are frequently ugly.
