Since it is a Cherokee, you may not have a transfer shifter to shift from 2H to 4wd, but it may have full time 4wd (meaning its always in 4wd). An easy way to know if it has 4wd is to look at the front differential and compare it to the rear differential. If they are the same size, then it is 4wd. Also, look for a transfer case underneath the vehicle.

I thought ALL Jeeps had 4WD. I don't think they come any other way.
Here's two things to check: first - look under the front end at the front axle. If there's a differential there similar to the one in back, it's got get-em-all.
Second, look at the controls inside. Is there a shifter to engage 4WD, low range, etc? That's usually a pretty good clue.
Speaking of clues, here's one more: If you buy this vehicle, READ, UNDERSTAND, AND FOLLOW THE OWNER'S MANUAL RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. Some 4WD vehicles can be severely damaged (that means huge repair bills) if you drive them on 4WD on pavement or hard surfaces. Some will flip easily in certain conditions. If you're asking basic questions like this about Jeeps, you probably don't know about some other "features" that come with 4WD. You can save yourself some money, and maybe keep from being injured, if you just take the time to learn a little about the thing first.

I'm guessing since your jeep is so new and you stated there's not a lever or buttons, that you have the newest version of Quadra-Drive which is just that, its full time 4WD, no neutral or low range position. This is actually a pretty descent system as most of the time the vehicle will drive and handle as a 2WD vehicle, but as soon as the rear wheels spin the torque sensing system will transfer power to the front wheels. Remember though, 4WD will help you get moving in snow/ice, but it will not help you stop.

The simplest way is to look at either the dash or next to the shifter. In most 4x4 models you can choose to be in 4 high 4 low or 2 wheel drive. There should be a dial or a shifter to get you into these driving methods.
The other option is if its next to another Jeep the overall stance is higher.
Good Luck

It will probably say 4X4 on the side of it or the back of it. If it doesn't look by the transmission shift lever for a label that says quadra-trac, quadra-drive, freedom drive.
NOTE: The new jeeps have push button 4WD in the center console by the transmission shift lever.

look under the cherokee, if you see a "pumpkin" in front it has 4 wheel drive. It should also have a selector inside to select 4wd
