The sudden the pain you are feeling is the rapid transfer of recptor cells from dendrite to axon. Nerves travel along very long stands of nerve cells throughout the body, which all lead to the brain. This is done by transfering receptor cells between them. Occasionally, too many receptor cells will be tranfered at one time causing them to shoot up the chain at a faster speed then normal. Your body reacts to this by releasing the excess receptor cells before it reaches the brain, which causes the sharp pain in your neck. This a random event in most cases. If it happens often, it may be a serious risk because your body is producing to many receptor cells, and i would go see a doctor.

So sorry you are in such pain. Try ice pack on your neck and Ibuprofen, to reduce swelling (But do not take Ibu if you have already taken naproxyn) You may end up seeing a Chiropractor. In the meantime try sleeping on your back with a towel rolled up under your neck and no pillow. Put a couple of pillows under your knees to relax your back. In the AM take a hot shower to relax muscles then do some overhead stretches.

I have a pain just below my neck on left side that does same thing. It has awoken me before. My doctor is of the opinion that it is nerve pain. I have a mixture of chronic pain diagnoses that involve nerves/pain transmission and muscular disorders. Muscle pain does not feel like nerve pain does not feel like bone pain. It could have a variety of causes, from a disc or a bone spur or another reason. It sounds to me like a nerve that is "pinched", which means that something is causing pressure on the nerve and the normal transmissions are being interfered with, causing pain.

No, but my mom sometimes used to have sharp pains in her neck and it turned out to be nerve related. The nerve was pinched.
I would recommend seeing your dr to have the evaluate this to see what they think is going on to cause this pain.

Yes, I've had this, and no, I don't know what causes it. It could be a nerve though.
