My partner has to make a father of the bride speech. The problem is that he raised his daughter on his own - mum left when she was 4, so the usual speeches i.e my wife and I etc. are not really appropriate. Her mum will be at the wedding but mum and dad have not spoken for some years.
Any suggestions

He should talk about what a strong, independent young woman she is & how proud of her he is and how wounderful it has been to see her grow and mature. Best not to mention any conflict, it will just ruin her special day.
Hope it goes well!

Making a nice, heartfelt father of the bride speech is the best gift a father can give to his daughter on her wedding day. Although almost all fathers realize this, not all of them are keen to prepare for their father of the bride speeches. With a little effort you can come up with a big surprise for your daughter. Begin off the reception speeches and toasts by adding your self. Enhance your daughter how beautiful she looks and also on her accomplishments. Remember together with your daughter concerning your favorite thoughts with her.

He should speak from the heart about his daughter, and his feelings for her, then welcome her new husband to the family. He can stick to 'I' and 'me' statements. I'm sure most of the guests will be well aware of the family situation. Those who aren't probably won't notice in particular as long as he doesn't go out of his way to bring it up.

There are a lot of men and women now making single parent speeches at their childrens' weddings. It's not so unusual as to cause a great deal of comment.

The most important thing is that he - and you - be as gracious as you can about the fact that the bride's mother is there. You don't even have to speak to her in particular to do that, let alone bring her up in a speech.
