I'm sure you'll be fine. Walk with Sixth or Seventh Avenue to 42nd Street and then take 42nd Street to Eighth Avenue (always well populated streets) - look like you know where you're going and stay near the curb, not near the buildings (so there's no chance of anyone jumping out and pulling you into a building or alley). Those street are well patrolled all night. Have a good time!

I have been alone around Port Authority at that time without any problems, but I guess it depends on you. It should be alright. Just walk closer to the streets, and avoid threatening looking people. If you see a few people walking in that direction, try to tag along a few feet behind them. I f you are really worried, take a cab or empty the important things out of your wallet or purse.

Check your bus schedule and see if your bus is running at that time..
follow the other ppl's suggestions as to walking. be aware of your surroundings and walk close to the street not the buildings.

First timer take a cab.
If you are uncertain you should not be walking this trip.
