The old testament serves the purpose that God intended.
The old testament consists of the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms.
Only the old law has been fulfilled and set aside by Jesus Christ.

If you read the Bible faithfully you would know that several times Jesus says, "I did not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it." (aka the Old Testament) While some of the Old Testament commands were done away with, not all were. Also, the Old Testament is not just laws. It has wonderful stories about men and women who loved God. The stories are interesting and reveal more about God to us.

Jesus' death did make the old law oboslete as stated at :
(Hebrews 8:13) In his saying “a new [covenant]” he has made the former one obsolete. Now that which is made obsolete and growing old is near to vanishing away.
(Matthew 22:40) On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”
But the Bible itslef also says :
(2 Timothy 3:16-17) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.
(Revelation 22:18-19) “I am bearing witness to everyone that hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll; 19 and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things which are written about in this scroll.

Jesus didn't come to abolish the law. He came to fulfill it.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Matthew 5:17
The full realization of God's relationship for us grew with the laws and Jesus, from the Christian perspective, is the Ultimate importance of that. God offered us laws to become closer to God and understand God better. Christians turn to Jesus to better understand God. But the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) are important to understanding who Jesus is and to understand how people related with God.
So the Old Testament is clearly important in the Christian Tradition.

We need decipher which are which, the commanments of God are not listed in ordinances while those of the law are .. The apostle mentions them often !
...What we really urgently need is a complete study of old testament law that Muslims use to kill people .. Because they refuse Christ and his followers they behead them!? Jesus Christ "abolished" the old testament laws ! The new covenant is here now, has been for 2000 years ..
...Eph 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, (opposition too) even the law of commandments/commands.. contained "in ordinances;" (Those) for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Many try to make the commandments put away, ..by misreading the verse.. they were "commands" given ..
..because the Muslim community hates Christ, they refuses what happened to the old ordinances and want to kill the opposition to their own corrupt beliefs ! The courts are beginning to fall for that stuff !? Sheri law can happen because of that! The Judges are cowering down from fear of reprisals ..

well that depends on what religion you are first of all. Jesus was Jewish and like many people on here, felt that G-d was an internal, rather than external experience. That's what made him radical. By telling people, it's not the laws that save you, it's your faith, he created chaos. For Christians and Muslims it's important to read the Hebrew Scriptures, because it documents early interpretations of man's relationship with G-d,the concept of Man's Covenant's with G-d and G-d's covenants with his people, which continue to this day. You could teach a whole class onthis topic but there's a little bit of why.
