I suggest contacting the manufacture of the tank.
While polyethylene is, in some cases, used to hold petroleum products, considering the cost of oil these days, and especially the consequences of a spill, I wouldn't want to take any chances.
I'd think in some cases a tank designed specifically for water storage may be constructed with a lower safety factor for strength due the lesser consequences of a water leak/spill.

"Poly" drums--the type sold for water storage--are made of high density plastic, and should not be used to store fuel. Over time, the fuel will react with the plastic (a hydrocarbon) and gradually deteriorate the drum interior.
