I found a cat that had been hit by a car today. She was still warm, her mouth was open and her bowels were beginning to leak.

I became hysterical (I have 4 cats of my own) and imedietely got a blanket from my car and wrapped her up and took her to the house she was in front of, which happened to be the right one. Once I got there I talked to her owner and tried to do CPR on her but it was too late.

If I had done cpr on the road could I have saved her?

I feel terrible.

unlikely... CPR doesnt help internal injuries... it only gets the heart and lungs going.
its good for things like heart attacks, poisons, some allergies, some diseases.... but rarely for car accidents.

this doesnt mean of course that you dont try (you should always try)..... it just means that it was probably too late or of not much use to begin with in this particular case.

No way. I'm sorry, but being hit by a car would have given the cat severe internal bleeding and performing CPR would not have had an affect. Also CPR on an animal is VERY different from a human (like not to be attempted) You run the risk of serious injuries to yourself as well as the animal and of course cross infection. If you find a cat on the road take it straight to a vet let them deal with it. (don't touch it if its awake and in pain call the RSPCA or likewise)

Oh I'm so sorry for you. I had a cat that died from old age but she suffered and I felt like I could've done more, but we couldn't bring ourselves to euthanize her. You need to know though you did the right thing. If the bowels were leaking and everything like you said, there was no saving that poor little cat. It's kind of the same principle as when a person gets a perforated bowel, it's a real medical emergency. I'm sure the owners are really grateful for all you tried to do. Don't beat yourself up over it, you couldn't have saved her.

Sorry you had to see this, I know it's horrible.

Rest assured there's no way you could've saved this cat, it was already dead when you found it, so even a vet with all the medical equipment in the world couldn't have brought it back. If its bowels were leaking, it had been gone a few minutes - this is the first thing to happen after death, when all the muscles relax.

I know it's lousy, but don't let guilt compound the matter because it's pretty clear there's nothing anyone could've done.

Aw, so sorry. I have 4 cats too. You probably couldn't have saved the poor thing. It was probably too far gone due to internal injuries. CPR only sometimes works if the heart and breathing stop, but not if injuries are too grave for survival.

At least you cared enough to help, and hopefully it didn't suffer very long.

Don't feel bad about it. I have raised many cats and most of them were run over by cats or killed by dogs. I know how you feel. If crying makes you feel better, cry. Don't let yourself get sick about it. Think about your kitties too.

I don't think it would have made a difference whether you did CPR on the road or not. I'm glad that you tried to save her and I am proud of you for not walking away. Most people (not cat owners, definitely) would say: "Ah, it's just a dumb animal. Leave it alone."

I'm glad you helped. Be proud of yourself for having this courage.

My condolences are sent to you over the web. :o)

OH, sweetie!!!

It probably wouldn't have mattered.

How sad for you. You really need to let this go. You are hurting your health, and you want to be healthy for your kitties don't you?

Take comfort from knowing you tried. A lot of people wouldn't have bothered. Certainly not given CPR to a strange cat.

Bless your heart, but no, it wouldn't have helped. If its bowels were already giving out, it was already dying and it was too late.
You have no reason to feel bad. Even if you had hit it, these things happen and it is tragic, but it was accidental and you did all you could. Just be glad the cat died quickly and it's suffering was minimal.

I absolutely agree with everyone else. That poor kitty was too far gone. There are far too few people in the world who would have stopped and helped like you did. Bless you for that. It's a great reminder that there are still good people in the world.

i in my view love cats, yet um... you ought to provide your chum a while to alleviate him/herself of the incident. Then consistent with possibility after some months, you could evaluate and propose a sparkling kitten for him/her. to no longer be offensive, even though it incredibly is a sturdy ingredient that it became in basic terms a kitten under a 300 and sixty 5 days old, reason if it became a cat that he/she had for like 10 years, i think of your chum will pass into utter melancholy for lots lots longer.
