I just wouldn't bother with natural remedies. OK, they won't harm your animals (actually, garlic might - DEFINITELY don't be using any human supplements!) but they're just not effective.
If you're worried about 'chemicals' know that's is only the ones sold in stores that are potentially dangerous. Modern flea treatments, from vets, are completely safe, and they actually work which is nice. I recommend Frontline, it treats fleas and ticks. Revolution does not treat ticks.
Whatever else you do or don't do, please don't use human products of any kinds on animals!

garlic is in the onion family and can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs. Unless it has been specifically processed for dogs it isn't safe to give dogs garlic, especially on a regular basis. Even if it is processed for dogs there is no evidence that it repels pests.
there really aren't any natural repellents. You'll need a regular flea and tick preventitive. Even then it doens't mean you'll never see a flea or tick...it means that them biting your dog is a death sentence for them.

Go see your vet and quit being cheap. The natural stuff can hurt your dog. Garlic can make dogs sick. It only works on vampires.

Brewers yeast from the health food store, rub it on the dogs, don't worry when they lick it, it's healthy. Carpet dehydrator from a feed and tack store...use it on your carpeted areas.
