Shih tzu- best choice but requires grooming no barking or biting
Bichon- little more barking but not extremely yappy, doesn't bite
Chihuahua- nippy to children, easy to care for, little barking
Beagle- no biting, more barking, runs away easily
Pug- good choice, but major genetic problems in the breed like hip dysplasia, eye issues, allergies

A Golden is always great for kids and families too, but it's bigger and sheds profusely. (Never bites, little barking)

My parents have a Pomeranian. It is adorable, doesn't bark much, is kid friendly.

My sister owns a Pug. It is kind of strange looking but full of personality. Very kid friendly, barks at strangers, probably a better watch-dog than the Pomeranian but it does look like a little old man. Pugs don't co-exist well with cats - the pugs eyes kind of "bug-out" and can get scratched easily.

You should do some independant research (and not trust our opinions) ... try some sites like www.dogomania.com and www.dogbreedinfo.com and www.thepetcenter.com. There are tons of other search engines you can use to find the right dog for you. Maybe after you narrow your choices down to a few breeds, you could post on here and get some specific feedback. Then, I hope you would consider getting a rescue dog first. Both of my dogs are rescue dogs I located using www.petfinder.com. Jim

Options for top three:

1) English Bulldog- Small, Friendly and definitely not a barker

2) Cairn Terrier - Small and friendly

3) German Spitz- Small and very friendly

4) Miniature Poodle- Good companion

5) Pug

All the five are top choices. Costwise- i guess the cairn is the costliest.

Try Cocker Spaniels. They're kid friendly, usually calm, although they can be very protective, and they're very intelligent.
