The whole purpose of Sharia is to better mankind, for example Sharia prohibits the use of usery, look for example at the world bank or any other bank, instead of bettering their situation it usually leaves them further in debt.
Sharia law discourages us to avoid the Haraam, some may see the punishments of some of Sharia laws as quite brutal but if you look at statistics from sites such as nationmaster.com which use offical UN reports to highlight figures such as crime you see in places where some form of Sharia is implmented the crime rate is drastically lower than countries such as the UK and USA.
For example:
1998- 2000
Saudi Arabia
Murder 105
Rape 87
Burglaries 11
Assaults 4705
UK
Murder 850
Rape 8,593
Burglaries 836,027
Assaults 450,865
USA
Murder 12,658
Rape 89,110
Burglaries 2,099,700
Assaults 2,238,480
Therefore I think that if you implement Shariah where the majority of the people are Muslim you will see people becoming less corrupt and crime rates drop.

Look at what's happening to the muslim countries: THEY ARE SUFFERING, everyone of them. Not one them is listed ont the top 10 economies/GDP or military or civic advancements(education, human rights etc.). And thats all because the rulers of each country, patriotic or not, have strayed away from Islamic law and kept the average civilian from calling themselves nominal Muslims.
Now if we look at where the Shariah law has been well established - the exceptional case of malaysia. They are currently the fastest growing muslim country. I see them as an example for muslim countries to follow.
Let's look at the opposite side: Turkey. The country has strayed away from Islamic law as much as could be. The father of the nation, Kemal Ataturk, had even talked about "abstaining" from Islam in politics. From a once great empire they are now begging the EU for membership, at the expesnse of all its Islamic heritage.
Another different Example: my homeland, Iran. It has imposed Sharia law, but not the proper perceptions of it. And the once great empireurned more and more down into an oil dependant nation. However the new laws made to equate the women in society had indirectly improved the economy. It now has a growth rate of 5.71% not bad.
The last example would be on of the places of my residence: Bangladesh. The Government support for "secularism" has not only imposed a mainstream secular teaching system, turned people into the immoral realms of unsocial disorder. The country suffers from high crime rates and corruption, certainly kicking its economy backward.
The examples all point to 1 thing: a well studied proper Islamic Sharia law must be imposed in ALL muslim countries, or things will never improve...
God willing, things will be better. That is my opinion
Assalamualaikum

Taken into account that many people can be corrupt, it does not matter if the law is Sharia or not. Many witnesses help make a case and send innocent people to jail in the USA. Look at these people who have spent 25 years behind bars for crimes they did not commit. Now they are being released because of either of two things; the DNA exonerates them or the witness changes their mind. Punishment is usually more server for Sharia laws but we all must have faith in ALLAH(swt) for he is all-knowing. Keeping this in mind if an innocent person suffers because someone has given false witness he will be rewarded in the here-after. Also, if it is found that the person gave false witness then he will be punished. All in all I think that Sharia deters people from committing crimes and bearing false witness.
The reason why Sharia does not work in many countries is because the Jews they do not want Sharia laws in Islamic countries..They are threatened by it. A country like Afghanistan started to follow Sharia laws and look what is happening in Afghanistan, they sent Al-Qaida to create a virtual war and not allow the Sharia laws to work and destroy Islam.

There are actually very few "laws" in the Quran. God mentions things that are haram(forbidden) and of course these should be followed....but basically Sharia is man made law derived from the Quran and hadeeth. The problem with Sharia is that its "man made" and thus in many regards it favours men over women, muslim over nonmuslim...just like many religions and laws out there in the world.
There are many areas of Sharia law that blatantly overirde or contradict something in the Quran....in which case, its haram and shouldnt be followed...but once again muslim countries are ruled by men, for men....so nobody seems to care much about Gods law.
I think Gods law should be followed first and foremost...all over the world....sharia can be followed as a set of rules and guidance as long as it in no way contradicts Gods law.

i'm a Non Muslim, although, i may well be very disillusioned if we ever went to Sharia regulation. that isn't any exciting in any respect from what i can tell. Our regulations we've in place now are extra effective than any previous regulation equipment from a some time past previous. If we live all below Sharia regulation, we be residing lower back to the stone age technologies clever.

I think Shariah Law is neccessary for Muslim countries because they are the laws from ALLAH(SWT) and are in the Qur'an and are there to help the people of the Muslim countries and protect them especially the women from harm. I think that there might be some governments in some countries like Iran who might misuse the Shariah Law for their own needs and the only way I can think of to combat that is to get rid of the president in Iran and put someone who will be there for the people and won't corrupt Shariah Law and someone who fears the fires of Jahannam and who fears ALLAH(SWT) to be in control of the country. I think that Muslims should also follow the strong Hadiths as the Prophet(PBUH*) told Muslims to follow the strong Hadiths as well as the Qur'an.

By the grace of Allah I have studied the Shari'ah with great scholars in America, Egypt, and Kuwait. The question is how to properly apply Shari'ah to today's world. No doubt the Taliban were sincere and the media naturally pictured them more extreme and hideous than they really were. That's because they have to raise public support for the war on terror (Islam).
That being said the Taliban had many huge flaws in their so called application of Shari'ah. One of those was the place of women in society. The preferred their un-Islamic culture to the divine Shar'iah. This was because #1 they weren't backed by qualified scholars and #2 this Shari'ah thing was new to them and their culture dates back centuries into the decline of Islamic scholarship and leadership. Secondly they focused on punishments before educating the people about religion and in genreal.
In Saudi Arabia they focus on forcing rules on people and enforcing the harsh punishments. Umar the second great Leader of the Islamci state after the Prophet suspended the legal retribution for stealing in the time of famine because people just wanted to eat.
I'll give you two examples of Shari'ahs application that is unfound in today's world of tyranny and injustice.
Umar was giving a speech when he was the Leader of an Islamic state ruling the middle east and had just toppled most of the Persian empire. His speech was about lowering the dowry and making it easy for the young adults to get married. A WOMAN stood up in the middle of the speech and redited 4:20 from teh Qur'an which states that A WOMAN may request a large dowry for he marraige gift. Umar said "THE WOMAN is right and Umar has mistakenly spoken against Qur'anic injunctions.
Case two. Ali who was the 4th leader of the Islamic state after the Prophet (Peace be upon him). Ali also happened to be the son in law of the Prophet. One day he found that a shield he had used to defend the Muslims in the time of the Prophet through constant plots by the pagans and Jews had been stolen. He was walking in the market one day and he saw a Jewish man with it. Ali who was the leader of a stte which now stretches across north africa and through the middle east to parts of Turkey and modern Afghanistan took this man to the court. The judge whom Ali appointed asked for Ali's evidence. He said its mine I can describe it to you. The judge then said to the Jewish man whats your case. He said its mine and all my family can attest to that it is in my possesion. The judge then ruled for the Jewish man becuase Ali has no witnesses and the evidence favors the Jew. So then Ali said "There is no way nor might except with God" adn walked away. The Jew then followed him and asked "your not going to overrule that decision" Ali said no "I hired that man to stand for the clear evidene no matter what." And although you are a theif and a liar the evidence is with you. The man proclaimed This character is only found in those who follow the Prophets as we read in the scripture so i must say "I bear witness that there is no Deity other than God and Muhammad is his messenger." (This statement enters one into the fold of Islam) Then he gave the sheild bakc to Ali but Ali would not take it and gave it to him as a gift for having became a Muslim.
This is the Shari'ah and this is what the world needs my dear brother. For more see teh link below
Sorry for the big answer but it is a big question as you mentioned. Allah ma'ak

Sharia is the islamic law sent down by God for all of mankind to rule according to Holy Quran and Sunna of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This is in order for us to live a better life in this world where every single man Muslim or non-muslim gets his share of rights under a just leader. But when we go back to history, we will come to know how this was applied practically by our Nabi(pbuh). The law was not applied on the lands all at once, it was gradually in a span of 23years. First of all, the working field of all Propehts is the human heart. they strive upon it to make man a better person, to be God fearing and trustworthy. to be Just and respectful. Propeht Muhammad (s) did the same way. I See how he brought up the pagans and educated them of high morals, how faith was inspired to them to an extend for them to become the most God fearing and trustworhy people. He showed us how a land must be ruled according to Islamic law. Kingship is not the Islamic way. The way 'Islam' shows choosing a ruler is through 'Mashoora or Mutual consultation', through which one who has much qualities in terms of Islam is choosen. We are given example of a leader and what qualities one must possess in sura Al-baqara, the story of 'Talut'. So Leadership is a high responsibility, that's the reason Umar (R) and many others stepped back when asked to take it.
Now, let's see today's Arab world and much of Muslim world. Not a single leader is elected through 'Mashoora' or mutual consultation by faithful Muslims or Do we see a sincere efforts that inherits the hearts with peity and Taqwa, do we see people fearing only Allah in their affairs like our salaf did.
I believe today's Muslims must apply sharia ourselves first. I have seen many who cry for sharia, but fails to attend the Fajr-Dawn prayer in Masjid. Everyone cries to apply Sharia on others but not ourselves. It is a Promise of Allah that the righteous shall enherit the land.
Allah has promised to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds that He will of a surety grant them in the land inheritance (of power) as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state) after the
fear in which they (lived) to one of security and peace: `They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me.' If any do reject faith after this they are rebellious and wicked. (Sura Al-Nur: Verse 55)
So it is like an automatic process, the sunna of Allah is same all the time. He sent all the Prophets with One universal truth. He did promise the word for Israel before time.
'And We made a people considered weak (and of no account) inheritors of lands in both east and west lands whereon We sent down our blessings. The fair promise of the Lord was fulfilled for the children of Israel because they had patience and constancy and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride). (Sura A,raf: Verse:137)
Every promise of Allah is upon qualities and not on labels. If all muslims shout and cry for help is of no use. Once we have the qualities that Allah wants us to be, we will surely be inheritors of the land even without cries and shouts.
Now your qustion of applying it today. As I said, if not in proper way, that would we worse. Many mis-use it to get Islam another bad name. We have more thieves than trusters. More ignorants than knowledge. Falsehood in its own has no basis, but falsehood can never be eradicated with falsehood, but only withtruth. There is no existance of darkness, it is the absence of light. So let every Muslim apply the law on him. Allah will surely fulfill His promise. We should belive and trust our affairs in Him. Other side is I live in Saudi Arabia, Life is far better and safe here. The crime rates are comparatevely very less here. Once sharia is applied, no one dares to do crimes fearing the aftermaths & severe punishments. Wherein my country India, people dares to do crimes. They know one way or the other they can get out even after long time. So ultimately applying sharia in its proper way brings good & harmony only.
