does anyone else feel uncomfortable burping your child on their bare back? I feel as if I am hitting her rather than burping her. I will either put a recieving blanket around her back and then burp, or i will seriously put clothes on her just to burp her (we live in Arizona, it is very hot so she is often in only a diaper when inside...). Am I the only crazy one?

lol my daughter knows that if she's dressed its either night-night time or we're going bye bye.

And with her, shes attached to my hip (im a stay at home mom) so its cuddle time 24/7!

I had no problem burping my kids bare back (that just sounds weird). It doesn't hurt them because you aren't hitting her, you are just tapping her back to help the gas move up.

You aren't crazy either... it's just something you do. We all have our things that we are "anal" about.

This is normal. I think I was thinking the same thing 20 years ago with my first daughter. I usually kept her in an infant t-shirt so there was just that little bit of barrier so I didn't feel like I was slapping her. I also changed my touch when burping her without clothes on. Less of a slap then a firm bump from the palm. Don't fret though. You won't hurt her.

Well, I certainly wouldn't worry about putting clothes on her just to burp her. That's time during which she is needing to burp and is probably very uncomfortable, so why do that to her? That's sort of like saying that you need to get up and get dressed in the morning before you can use the toilet, no matter how bad you need to pee!

lOL. You gave me a laugh. No I had no problem burping my baby with a naked back. You are patting not hitting. You could try rubbing instead. I was actually told by nurses patting /rubbing etc. does nothing to help but it makes a mum feel good to be doing something. If you feel better wrapping first then go ahead. Whatever works for you

It's not usually the patting that causes the baby to burp but the movement of you jiggling or pressure on the tummy. Just try rubbing your baby on their back. It will also be a nice cuddle time.

Me too. I did the same thing. I always put something over my son's back like a blanket or cloth diaper.

I didn't like "slapping" her back either, so I put a burp cloth over her back!

As long as you've got a diaper on her you should be fine. You're not hitting her hard enough to do her any damage.

We do it all the time here in Hawaii.......a almost naked baby is a happy baby here.......

You are not crazy, I put t-shirts on both my babies in the heat or a blanket like you do.

Even so, sometimes it does feel like you are beating that bubble out of them.
