I was just wondering what are some uses for these? I remember when I was in 5th grade, a camp counselor had one of them when we went hiking, but a regular LED flashlight probably would have sufficed. What else could these powerful flashlights be used for?

These are "Distress/Location Marker Beacons", or "strobes". You carry one when You are up country in case of a medical or other life threatening emergency. You use it to establish a visually verifiable point of reference for purposes of recovery and resupply at Your geographically isolated (remote) area location. In other words, it shows the 'dust-off' team where You are ( in the dark or in sunlight), thus facilitating rapid extredition.
An alternative use is as a sourse of heat for combating hypothermia, and even as a fire starting device, fish attractant and as a means of warding off wild animals (and other unwanted pests). A GOOD piece of gear to carry.
