It is a sin, and I can explain why. When a person is masturbating, 10 out of 10 chances are, they are lusting. Jesus said on the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5) that if we look with lust then we commit adultery in our heart. That is wither we are looking with our eyes or our mind and imagination. The 7th commandment is "you shall not commit adultery" and of course the Biblical definition of sin is "Transgression of the Law" (1John 3:4) that Law being God's moral law, the 10 commandments.

Not a Christian, but I was one.
The Bible explicitly states that lusting after another is a sin, which is most likely what you're doing if you masturbate. This isn't necessarily true, though.
On the other hand, masturbation itself can be seen as purely self-serving and allowing oneself to be caught up in this world. In that sense, perhaps the act itself is a sin. But if you accept that, then you might have to accept that doing anything fun is wrong... and I doubt that.

The Bible does mention it....in the passage already stated about not spilling your seed upon the ground...and there is the "fantasy issue" being kin to adultery....but I feel the issue is not as important to God as it is to some denominations and more of a personal decision....there are a lot of issues more important to the Kingdom, in my opinion.........I can't see where it could harm you physically, in fact in some situations I feel it could actually be beneficial, but it could create guilt if you have been told it is immoral.

I've never seen the word in the Bible. Some would argue that it's sexual gratification which is not open to the possibility of procreation, and therefore bad.
Not being a Christian myself, and recognizing that it's somewhat instinctual, I don't see any problem with it; nor do the Pagan Gods and Goddesses that I know of. So, if it feels good, do it.

The Bible does not mention masturbation. In the story of Onan, God punishes Onan for not giving a child to his widowed sister-in-law; the story is not about masturbation.
Masturbation promotes prostate health in men, prevents unwanted pregnancy, prevents the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, helps to control the overpopulation problem, and relieves stress.
Don't be fooled by silly answers.

Some religions teach that it is sinful; check out "Onanism" and the story of Onan in the Torah ("Old" Testament to you Christians out there). It's not really a question of masturbation, but some interpret it that way. I'm sure you can decide for yourself, though.

Masturbation is a sin because it is harming the body.

Jersey, it's not mentioned in the bible, but I'm sure it is not a sin.

The bible doesnt mention it. I don't think it is a sin, but I do think it is just frowned upon.

I agree with Jason M about what goes with the act (lust) as being sin. Masturbation itself, maybe not but lusting will be right there with it.
