How many miles over the posted limit is acceptable to you? I say no more than 5 over, because 10 over will definitely get you a ticket.

I wanted to know what cops thought.....not random, miscellaneous individuals

It depends on lots of things. Small cities will hammer you for 5 over or so just because it's their revenue. I am in a big city and will tell you what I do. I do not have radar so when I get someone from speeding they are in front of me where I am able to pace them. I will usually give a driver 10 over. I have only written 3 or 4 speeding tickets. When I see someone in pulling away from me and in and out of traffic that's when I will stop them for speed. The few I have written they were going 20 over the posted.

Im not a real cop...but am an Air Force cop.

Before running radar or laser I was amazed anyone could just look at a car and tell how fast they are going...but you get used to it.

If someone is driving faster (even 5mph) than the rest of traffic and changing lanes Ill stop them.

Its very easy to notice aggressive drivers...but if there is not traffic I got no problem with 10 over unless its around the school or foot traffic areas, if you are around the school or places where people are walking you should do the limit

good luck

Meh. Depends on my mood and other things.

The highway- I generally give 10 over before I stop them. 13 over before I write them.

City streets, depends on the road condition, child present, speed limit ect. School zone, you get 5. Most other streets, probably 10.

Like I said, it all depends. If there is something funny about the car, I may stop them for 2 over the speed limit.

5 over is definatly fine unless there are children present in a school zone or there is construction or the weather is bad. i think they should really give you a warning if it is 10 over and a ticket if it is 15 over :) I have gotten my share of tickes and they were all over 10..and the one warning I got was when i was going 3 over..but the cop was just there to scare the children at school who just got their liscenses.

I heard you don't get pulled over (on the freeway) unless you're going more than 8 over.

If you're in a small town, you'll get pulled over for driving only a couple over... stupid speed trap towns; they get a lot of their income from out of state drivers that cant contest the tickets.

11 miles an hour over, but on the other hand if they are doing 5 over but are changing lanes and driving like the trunk is on fire then i will pull them over

that is very subjective and also depends on the state, road or interstate and time of day and exact location i.e. in town, out of town and what the posted speed limit is... i.e. if the limit is 70 you may be allowed more MPH over than if the speed limit were 25mph

one other thing it depends on is if the copper is interested in you or your car and wants a reason to talk to you or look at your shiny new car
