Cool, I was going to say banana before I clicked on to answer! Yes, then I always had to buy a bunch, too, and tell the cashier to add the weight on of another banana! They were always pleased that we were so honest!

Apples! He's almost 2 and thinks tomatos are apples too. If he sees either we end up getting a bag of cheap apples for him. Sometimes he wants the bananas too, since the produce is by the deli we can get the banana weighed and paid for no problem.

My 2 yr old son likes a variety or maybe it depends on what isle we are in when he gets hungry. Sometimes it's chips or crackers, sometimes cheese from the deli, sometimes a banana or a golden delicious apple or even a Popsicle. If he sees chicken or pasta he wants that too and that is usually when I break open the chips.

I know that chips isn't the best snack but it is a weekend ritual for him and Daddy on Saturday nights.

Sometimes I would open the cereal box for her. Otherwise, I buy her a box of those Barnum's Animal crackers (the little box that's $.95) She has to be good the whole time we're in the store, and if she is, I let her eat them on the ride home.

Apples & Shrek M&Ms
I pick up an extra pack of m&m's and apple so they can be purchased fully. After I buy the extra I leave them on the counter. She's usually finished with whatever she picked anyway. I'm not really uptight about eating in the store. I always use cash, cards go through on 50% of the time.
With kids you have to let the small stuff go.

GOLDFISH!

Actually, I don't open them. I make certain I've got some on hand, as I was brought up to never, ever, ever open a package you've not yet paid for.

That said, my mother, who taught me that, will open the packet of goldfish for my son. ARGH.

(and how on earth could you not know bananas are sold by the pound?)

I do not allow my child to eat in the store I think it is poor training to eat what you have not purchased. I feed her before we go out and when we go home. Things that are sold by weight like fruit cannot be properly weighed with the food already consumed.

You're teaching your child to use food as a pacifier or to cure boredom. I wouldn't recommend a child eating in the store, especially if it hasn't yet been paid for!

Feed him prior to shopping and bring along water or juice to drink. You're creating a habit that will be almost impossible to break, especially when you decide not to allow it any longer! He will throw fits!

Be careful what habits you start because breaking them can be torture!

My nieces like to eat anything they can get their hands on and open before their mom notices!

Keep in mind that if you let your son eat a banana that hasn't been paid for yet, you're in essence stealing since fresh fruit is sold by weight not by quantity....shame!

i don't open things in the store for my chidren to eat, if i want them to have a snack i bring food from home.

i am always paranoid my check card will not go through (every now and then that happens and when i call the bank they have no idea why, so that keeps me on my toes)

and just FYI most fruit is sold by weight so i feel it is dishonest to eat that in the store without paying for it first!
