I am flying to the U. K. in the fall, and I am trying to get a cheap flight--so I am looking at American Airlines, Air Canada, Virgin, etc.

There are. Lufthansa's student pricing is called Generation Fly: http://www.generationfly.com/
Here are more sources for student tickets:

Student tickets are not always the cheapest option, but they usually are if you need to stay longer than 3 months. They also are easier and cheaper to change.

Airlines pretty much did away with student fares decades ago, this was done when the airlines were deregulated. Of course the trade was cheaper fares for everyone else.

You can still find some, but most are not cheaper than most standard airfares you can find. On top of that, they have all kinds of restrictions, are hard to fit into your schedule, and don't apply during the high seasons.

You are better off just getting a good discounted airfare from the start.

Suggest you look at http://www.whichbudget.com since they list all budget and seasonal charter operators on various Trans-Atlantic routes.

And yes, there are student fares or youth fares but these depend upon airlines and most are offered during off-peak season. You'll need to enquire with the airline you wish to fly. Your best bet would be Asian and Middle Eastern carriers who offer such fares.

No such thing.
In the fall tickets are lower than the summer months.
