I have a friend who is an orthodontist who told me that a slightly gummy smile is considered more youthful and attractive compared to someone who doesn't show any signs of gums. However, I think we all can agree that an extremely gummy smile may distract from other attractive features on the face. What are some of your opinions?

People...I am doing research on beauty (it's equation) and asking these questions are related to just that. However, some of you seem to think it's OK to be rude with not even knowing why this is being asked. Move along charlies, move along.

I smile with a lot of gum tissue showing. I have been told I have a beautiful smile. Personally I wish my lip came down lower..lol. Most people think I look younger than my age, so maybe its true!

Who gave me a low score??? I have both teeth and gums showing when I smile. I don't have tiny little nubs of tooth and lots of gum. Geez people.....I'm a darn hygienist, don't you think I'd know the difference.

The reason your orthodontist told you that a gummy smile is more youthful is because when a young person smiles the teeth that are seen most prominently are the upper teeth. When an older person smiles the most prominent teeth are the lower teeth. Most non-dentists don't know of this phenomena but check it out...it's true. When grandpa smiles you mostly see his lower teeth and very little of his upper teeth.

Gum and/or bone removal can enhance the appearance of a "gummy smile" but not every patient is a good candidate for this type of cosmetic enhancement. In other words, you don't want to change your gummy smile into a smile that looks like your teeth are way too long. A good cosmetic dentist can evaluate your smile and decide if you are a candidate for cosmetic enhancement of your smile.

Having gums that have grown too far down onto the tooth is not youthful. I worked for a periodontist who performed surgeries on such people and the results were amazing!! It changed people's lives, honestly. Gummy smiles are not attractive at all. In fact, I think that it absolutely takes away from someone who could be very attractive without the extra gums. This procedure is commonly known as cosmetic crown lengthening or crown elongation and truly has dramatic results!

I have given you some before and after links. See for yourself.

I suppose it makes me think of children sometimes but it also makes me think of mentally challenged people. I'm being totally honest. I'm not a fan of the gummy smile since the teeth are usually very tiny and I tend to stare. I've seen before and after photos of people who had that procedure done to cut back the gums and they always looked better afterward.

Gum surgery around the areas may be necessary. Also called "tooth lengthening". The gums are gently trimmed around the tooth in question so as to take away some of the gum, and make the tooth [teeth] appear longer. This type of gum or periodontal surgery costs around $650.00 PER AREA. Many dental insurances will cover it, as that procedure is considered to be basic dental work. Veneers cost around $600.00 per tooth. Full crowns are $1000.00 per tooth. A beautiful smile is worth its weight in gold! Good luck
