Jehovah's Witnesses certainly like NWT, but they are happy to use any translation which an interested person may prefer, and in fact Jehovah's Witnesses themselves distribute other translations besides NWT. Jehovah's Witnesses attach no particular infallibility or inspiration to NWT.

It seems that the vast majority of the criticism against the New World Translation is actually as a proxy for blind hatred against Jehovah's Witnesses. The hatred must be "blind" since secular experts of biblical Hebrew and Greek have consistently refused to condemn any particular verse or phrase as an unacceptable translation. Instead, it is religionists with preconceived theologies who bigotedly insist upon particular wordings, since these are necessary to prop up the shaky tenets of their false worship.

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

It seems significant that the relatively small religion of Jehovah's Witnesses are the ones best known for their worldwide preaching work. Yet Jesus commanded that ALL who would call themselves "Christian" perform this public work:

(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.

First of all, the bible translation that is published by JWs (called the New World Translation) is our preferred version, but not the only one we'll use. I have over 50 bible translations/versions that I use in my studies. The biggest difference is the name of God appearing where it should (note that there are other bible versions that also do this which are not JW bibles). Rather than list all the scriptures, compare the ever- popular KJV. In the KJV, everywhere that you see the words "LORD" or "GOD" in all capital letters it's supposed to say "Jehovah". Do some research and you'll see this is correct. Also, with the help of "Strong's Dictionary of Greek and Hebrew Words" you'll begin to notice some flaws in the KJV, such as the word "hell" being used to translate 3 different words with 3 different meanings, and the word "nephesh" being translated as "soul" every time in the KJV when the word actually means "life", "creature", or "vitality". Nothing in the NWT that seems to differ from other widely used bibles fails to have an explanation, such as renderings of Greek text based on the structure of the language, for example when it comes to inserting a definite article (the word "a", as in "a" man, or "a" beast, etc...). Every perceived difference of this translation to others is explained in the appendix. You should get one (for free) from your local Kingdom Hall and check it out and decide for yourself. That will be easier than anyone here trying to explain it here and you having to listen to any JW bashers trying to lie about it!

One example: John 1:1. Most English Bible read "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." The JW Bible reads "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god." (I'm going from memory here).

In this case, when you take an introductory class on Greek, they teach you that nouns lacking a definite article should be translated with the indefinite article. Thus, "ho Theos" = "the God," while "Theos" = "a god." But if you stick with the course until lesson 15 or so, you learn that the direct object is always omitted in the predicate nominative in order to differentiate the subject from the predicate. The original translator of the New World version never made it to lesson 15 (as a subsequent court case actually proved), and so never learned how to differentiate subject from predicate by dropping the definite article. Hence the doctrine that Jesus was "a god" rather than "the God."

Other passages utilize creative punctuation to substantuiate the idea that Jesus was actually an archangel, and not the Jehovah of the Old Testament.

One Translation, Many Languages

A translation committee of experienced anointed Christians was organized to produce the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures in English. It was published in six volumes, released from 1950 to 1960, beginning with the Christian Greek Scriptures. Since 1963 it has been translated into an additional 27 languages, with more in progress. The goals for other languages have been the same as for English. First, the translation should be accurate, as near to the original thoughts as possible. The meaning must not be bent to conform to a particular doctrinal understanding. Second, consistency should be maintained, the translation holding to one rendering for each major word as far as the context reasonably permits. Such an approach helps readers to see how Bible writers used specific words. Third, the translation should be as literal as possible without obscuring the meaning. Literalness gives the reader closer access to the flavor of the original languages and the associated thought processes. And fourth, it should be easy for the common people to read and understand.

The rather literal style of the English New World Translation facilitates translating it into other languages. For this purpose the Society’s translation teams presently use advanced computerized tools to speed up their work and to make it more accurate. This system helps translators to compile lists of vernacular equivalents for each major word. It also enables them to study the English renderings of each Hebrew and Greek word in the Bible.

Translating from the English, rather than working directly from the Hebrew and Greek, offers important advantages. Besides shortening translation time, it makes possible greater unity of expression in all languages. Why? Because it is much easier to translate precisely from one modern language into another than to translate from an ancient language into various modern ones. After all, translators can consult with native speakers of modern languages but not of languages spoken thousands of years ago.
