i need a copy of police report on a case thaTS BEEN CLOSED ALMOST A YEAR. I was never questioned so im not part of the case itself.it involves violent exboyfriend who was parolee.the incident happened in stanislaus county,cal

Contact the police department and request the case file. You might have to pay a fee but it is public record and you are entitled. Tell them you are writing a paper for school, or if you are older, an article for a magazine. That way they are less likely to "lose" the file. You will need accurate names and approximate dates, but exact dates would be better.

In most jurisdictions, the initial police report is a public record.

Follow-up reports, however, are usually considered confidential criminal justice information. (That would include witness statements, photographs, results of testing, etc).

The public information is available simply upon your request (you may have to pay a copying fee). The confidential information is available only upon a court order.

If he went to trial for the case, it's public knowledge and you should be able to find it in the county clerc's office where the police report was written. If nothing ever came of it, you can ask but you will likely not be granted your request.
