The two cartridges shoot exactly the same bullets. The 30-06 is a longer case with more neck and a slightly larger capacity, so it'll shoot the popular 150 and 165 grain bullets perhaps 100 fps faster, but when it comes to the 200 and 220 grain bullets, they encroach on the powder space in the 308 more, so there's a bit more difference. With the premium 180 grain bullets available these days, there's little need for most people to use the heavier bullets, except perhaps if that's all the gun you have for the large bears, or on the larger African plains game, so there's not much to argue one way or the other.

Both cartridges use .308" diameter bullets ranging from 100 grains to 220 grains. The main difference is that the .30-'06 tends to gain 200-400 feet per second more velocity in all bullet weights.

I like the .308 Win better, but that is because of the handy short-action rifles it is chambered in more than any superiority over the old '06.

Get a rifle chambered for either caliber and you can handily take any game in North American, short of the big Alaskan brownies.

The 30-06 edges out the .308 in most ballistics testing.

308 is in a different class in my book, 30-06/270/7mm and all excellent all around guns from varmint to big game but out of the three above I favor the 30-06

Guess what? the bullets are the same. The calibers are different. The .30-06 Springfield is more versatile (especially if you handload), but both are very close ballistically.

I prefer the 30-06, but the .308 isn't bad either, I feel that it is your preference, it all depends on what you like.

I believe the question you need to ask is "which is a better cartridge?", considering both cartridges fire the same bullet. Both cartridges will do almost exactly the same thing, with the slight advantage going to the longer 30-06

I would say the 30 odd 6 is more power full.
