Just so you know, the term is "derail" not "offrail."
And, no, it won't happen. But, here's a cool thing to do: Lay 5 or 10 coins on the rail, in a line, each one slightly overlapping the next one. When the train flattens them, they'll be welded together into a kind of long strand or chain. Sometimes you can bend them into a bracelet!

I was on the Train years back on my way to the City (NYC) and it stopped suddenly. It seemed that some stupid kid put a shopping cart on the tracks and our train hit it. Nothing happened. I don't think a penny will do much damage to a train. The train will damage the penny though.

It is very unlikely. The wheel would have to be pushed up or aside enough for its flange to get on top of the rail. This is most likely to happen on rails that are not precisely aligned and supported. The thickness of a coin can't raise or push a wheel that far. A very rare circumstance might derail a railroad wheel if the rail has been poorly maintained and something additional interferes with the wheel. Coins may not be hard enough, also, to actually interefere.

no,.............trains are not that fragile...................
but with other factors present if you then add a coin on the tracks it might appear to be caused by a simple coin,...
remember they've done a pretty good job on other trains,
livestock,cars,18wheelers,etc and haven't come off,..............................then again anything pushed to extremes '
........a straw or a penny can break it's back
(a 300mph bullet train might apply)

Why does everybody thinks she means putting a coin on the rail?
Maybe she meant paying somebody to take a portion of the rail off?
What a silly question! Kids have been doing this since the trains have been invented. BUT do not do it yourself! Being as smart as you are, you'll keep your hand on the coin to prevent it from falling off...
DO NOT DO IT.
