Not proper english...it's: "I am"

The King and I is a very popular musical.

But "is" doesn't refer to "I" as a first-person subject pronoun but to the entire proper noun, The King and I. "Is" will never refer to "I" as a pronoun by itself.

Those who claim that it is always improper are wrong. I will give examples of when it is proper:

The word I is the first person singular pronoun. I is spelled with one letter. I is composed only of one vowel. Etc.

I can think of two situations:

'I' is the ninth letter of the alphabet.
'i' is the first person singular subject pronoun.

Actually, it is proper grammar if you are referring to the letter I, not yourself, as in: I is the ninth letter in the alphabet.

Never.

I Is, You Is, We Is, They Is arent proper grammar.
However

He Is and She Is are okay when talking about them in the present tense.

never

and Rae is completely wrong when she says "is" indicate plural nouns. plurality has nothing to do with it. you can say "he is" and talk about only one "he". you can say "mike is" and talk about only one "mike".

and what about the plural noun "dogs"? would you say "the dogs is licking my face". ?? i hope not.

whoever gave her a thumps up for that response is equally as retarded.
