Yes, we abstain from drinking coffee because of the Word of Wisdom which consist that you won't take anything that could harm your body because your body is your temple and the temple of the holly spirit. You're not supposed to drink coffee, tea, alcohol, use tobacco or drugs in order to follow the Word of Wisdom.
We don't do these things because they're not healthy to our bodies and can lead to an addiction and you're not supposed to be addicted to anything but God's love.
We are promised that if we avoid these things we are going to be blessed and live a healthier life.
Keep reading the Book of Mormon, it has many answers! if you have any question, call the missionaries they will be more than happy to assist you. ^_^

It isn't banned, just strongly discouraged. They have found that there is a substance in coffee that can cause some serious problems for some people. Some people on here said that soda is banned. It isn't. You can drink any kind of soda you want. There is nothing that says it is caffeine that is the problem. Right now, I'm having a root beer float, so really, it's ok for us to drink soda!
We follow what is called the word of wisdom. It helps us to know what God wants us to take into our bodies. We believe that our bodies should be kept clean and pure, and the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea can cause problems within our bodies. It is also to keep us free from addiction. That way, we can think for ourselves and not have to worry about where our next fix is coming from.

Yes, this is true. The original revelation just said hot drinks. This was later interpreted to mean specifically coffee and tea. The reason is not the caffeine. This can be removed, but uncaffinated coffee and tea is still harmful. There are other harmful effects from these beverages. Drop someone's dentures into a cup overnight and see the effect. It's doing the same thing to your body as it is to the ceramics.

Yes, Mormons do not believe in drinking coffee. The Word of Wisdom (which is the revelation that says internally consuming alcohol and tobacco are a no-no) warns against consuming "hot drinks." Joseph Smith (to whom the revelation was given) was later asked what the Lord meant by "hot drinks," and he said that the term was specifically referring to coffee and tea, and no prophet has changed that since then (so technically, caffeine isn't the reason, as even decaffinated coffee falls under that umbrella).

Doctrine & Covenants 89: 9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
Later prophets determined this to be coffee and tea. But herbal teas are all right.
D&C 89:10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
We don't know why coffee and tea are not allowed. I was told, by many different bishops and stake leaders, that caffeinated soft drinks are not banned, and even green tea is between me and the Lord, but were not enough to keep me out of the temple.

Okay: I'm gonna explain this one more time:
Doctrine and Covenants section 89 Verse 9: "And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly." The original admonition was against coffee and teas they are normally server hot. There is no mention of caffeine
However, the Great Minds of Mormonism got together and determined that God must've really meant anything Hot with Caffeine - Including Iced Tea and Frappachino.
"Hot Chocolate, which contains both "Hot" and "caffeine" is exempt, for reasons not yet explained (revealed).
This was taken farther by some members avoiding 'Cola Products', as they contain caffeine, even the the decaf ones, even though they are served 'cold'.
Curiously, in the middle of verse 17," ... and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks,..."
Barley is the main ingredient in Beer, a mild drink...
Now, wasn't this as clear as Dark Ale?

Mormons covenant to follow the Word of Wisdom, a health code established by God in the Doctrine and Covenants Section 89 that advises us to abstain from coffee, tea, alcohol, and has been interpreted by modern prophets as advising against drugs as well.

We abstain from substances that are harmful to the body. Coffee and tea contain things that are not good for us. Tanic acid and caffeine are in them that are very harmful. So we stay away from them, just as alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
