I have a quarter from 1960, that sounds different than other ones from earlier. I want to know if it is made of a different material or metal. When the quarter is dropped or you tap it on something, it sounds different than other quarters. Why?

Up until around 1965, the quarters and dimes, and fifty cent pieces and silver dollars were made of all silver. Then the govt started making them with 50% copper. Hope that helps.

You figured it out. Sometime after 1970 quarters underwent 2 changes: the metal was changed, and they were made into a metal sandwich: the edge NOW reveals there's a center layer that's different in material and color from the front and the back.

I'm pretty sure your quarter has some silver in it. Modern quarters do not. Yours is worth a bit more to collectors.

The changes made the quarter cheaper to make. The value is whatever the people believe it to be, which is usually what the government says it is.

Quarters made before 1965, i.e. 1964 and earlier are made of pure silver. Starting in 1965 they use filler in the middle of the quarter. The brown stripe on the side that you see.
A pure silver quarter will have a much higher pitch sound when dropped.

Starting in 1965 the precious metals were taken out of our coins. Any silver coin from before 1965 is worth more than its face value That is why you seldom find one

the coin you have contains 90 per cent silver by weight.
silver is currently at $13.09/oz, so irrespective of the coin's
condition, it is worth more than face value.
