The amount of water and the decision to want to do it. Babies don't really have a choice.

I asked this question a couple days ago and this is what someone else said:

"Some churches use the words interchangably but technically, christening is the sprinkling of water on a childs head to signify the washing away of sin....and baptism is the complete submersion of the entire body into water...to signify the same thing by the way. Submersion baptism is used primarily by churches who feel that the individual person must make a decision on their own to follow God/Jesus...and that the wishes of the parents do not matter...as in a christening/baptism of infants. Thus, baptism does not take place until the youngster is wise enough in the spirit to be able to make that committment."

A christening is something some parents desire to do. It does NOT save the soul of the child. For it is more a ceremony for the parents/family to make a dedication to the Lord to raise their child up according to His Word.. A baptism is a personal choice signifying your commitment to walk with Jesus in newness of life. A baptism doesn't save you, but it is an important part of your testimony. Jesus was baptized. We need it far more than Him!

Not in purpose but in method. Either way it is the symbolic gesture to wash away sin. Baptism is usually reserved for those that have attained an age of responsibility and understanding of the concept of God, sin etc. Christening is when the parents make the decision for the child.

Depends on which church you're in. In churches that baptize infants, baptism and christening are different words for the same act of initiating someone into Christianity. Churches that only baptize adults don't use the word christening, and they don't recognize infant baptism/christening as real baptism.

well technically, christening is the baptism of infants and giving them a good christian name and stuff. The difference is if you are given a christening, you really have no choice in the matter. But you can choose to be baptized later in life.

Christening is when, as the parents' of the baby, you are saying that you will raise your child by God's ways. Baptism is when the child decides HE wants to live for God, a personal decision by the child. So, one is for the parents' on is for the child, when he's ready.

Christening we call in our church a baby -dedication. You dedicate your child back to God .
Baptism , you have to be old enough to understand the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and be able to decide for yourself , if you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Then you get baptized.
