I've seen on here 2 or 3 really nasty atheists who simply go off on God just for the heck of it. But I have a bet going that the atheists on here will decide. If you are talking with it could be anyone & they were to say something like God Forbid or Lord help me, I doubt very much that most of you would say Your God doesn't exist or Lords not going to help you. I say that the only time you say that is when people ask how you feel or what your opinion is. My brother thinks that atheists will take any opportunity to spout off & I say only when provoked. All atheists opinions welcome. Please no one who believes answer, this is an important bet, Thank you.

Thank you to all who answered Rebecca for some reason you feel insulted, I apologize if you thought this question was insulting to atheists, I really did not mean to insult you. I am a Christian but am aware that atheists are more educated when it comes to religion that most

I had a sweetheart tell me today "god bless" then apologized. I quickly let her know that it was quite ok. I feel people should be able to choose who and how they worship. I mean "god bless" are just words to me, nothing more nothing less. I will only go into details when attacked or asked. Thank you for asking in an intelligent manner in which I did not feel provoked

No, I can't really think of a situation where I would bring that up without being asked specifically what I thought on the matter.

My idolect includes 'God damn it', 'Bless you', 'God forbid', and the occasional ironic 'Praise Jesus!'. American English is rife with Christianisms; language bears the mark of culture, and culturally the US and UK are Christian. So I wouldn't ever jump on someone for using those sorts of phrases.

No, I don't take every opportunity to spout off like that. In fact, expressions like "lord help me!" are so entrenched in the vernacular that even us non-believers might slip up and use them once in a while.
I really only give my opinion in regular conversation when asked point-blank about it.

for heaven's sake, what's a good Christian boy doing betting?
My lord, you have the nerve to say that we insult your god. We must certainly do not, we just do not believe in him or any other.
No need to insult; is there? God bless.

I side with you. There are a lot of idiomatic expressions that people use that come from religion. I would never rebuke anyone for using one of these idiomatic expressions. Heck, I use some of them myself, like "bless you" when someone sneezes (though I also say "Gesundheit!" about as often).

I make it a point to never, ever bring up religion (or my lack thereof) unless asked first.

Plus, I myself will say things like "for the love of god..." Just because it's been ingrained in me over the years. I'd never fault someone else for saying it.

I hear things all the time like "bless you" or "god willing" and I completely ignore it. I only talk about my atheism when the topic comes up in a real discussion, not random saying.

Even I say jesus christ when I'm ticked. it just rolls of the tongue

Um, I'm not going to give someone a hard time for using figures of speech. Nor would I lecture people about their beliefs just because they mentioned they believed in a god.

I've answered this question before. I am not a jerk. I would be polite and let it pass. I do not take every opportunity to spout off my beliefs. I only answer when asked.

I think the most intelligent ones open their mouths when they feel the need to, and realize that the need does not always arise due to a slight mention of "God." After all, the phrases are commonplace.
