There is quite a bit of information out there on Lucid Dreaming, remembering your dreams and learning from them. Run a search on Lucid Dreaming on dogpile.com to learn more.
I tend to have very vivid dreams and in my case it depends on how tired I am but if I'm not completely out of it, I can usually tell the difference between a dream and reality and if I don't like the way a dream is going I can change it. Usually I take control back or change the subject. I don't try to totally control my dreams because they are what they are, but I can interrupt, rewind, and turn things around if needed.

Good question. I don't know how you'd do it with no forethought while actually "in" the dream, but I do know that you can affect the dream if it is a recurring one. Without going into detail, I knew of a police officer who told me that as a rookie he would often have a dream at night that he was in a gunfight with a suspect, and he couldn't get his pistol out of the holster in time...that it was jammed inside the holster, and that he was being shot. He'd wake up in a cold sweat. For a few nights after that, every night, he would say to himself that "tonight I will draw faster than the suspect and will not be shot myself". He told me that a few nights later he had the dream again, but this time a part of his mind "Played back" what he'd told himself while awake, and he survived in the dream without waking up. After that, he never had that dream again.

that is a good question. i had a bad dream and i even kept waking up because i was scared but i would just continue the dream. Now if i has a awesome dream and i woke up, i wouldn't even be able to continue were i left off. what's up with that. I think that nightmares are so glued in your head that it is hard to forget them no matter how hard you try. The more you tell yourself to not dream about it, the more you think about it.

It isn't easy but you can actually have a bit of control of your dreams. i have done it only a couple of times. you have to be really focused before you go to bed and I guess kind of visualize yourself knowing when you are dreaming and then move it along to a different direction. the first time i was having a nightmare and there was a moment that i realized that it was a dream and kept telling myself to wake up and I did. the other time i dont think it was a nightmare but i realized that i was dreaming and i guess i just chose something nice and dreamt about that but it didnt last too long tho. but it worked. I think the key is be really focused before you fall asleep.

You don't, that is the power of dreaming. You live things that would kill you in the real world. When you awake you feel the real strength or you let it hold you back.
