I am at a loss right now.... I'm not sure how to housebreak my puppy....my boyfriend and I got a puppy a few weeks ago and we are not sure how to housebreak her. We've read alot about this topic, and the number one solution seems to be crate training her. The only problem with that is we both work 12-13hrs and we just think that is cruel to put her in there for that long. We have someone that does come over and check on her on a regular basis, but we are running into the problem that they can't check on her everyday. We don't work everyday 12-13hrs a day its more like every 2-3 days then we have 2-3days to spend with her. She is just a puppy and I do understand that it takes time, but I just wanted to know if there was any advice someone could give me....We are trying to paper train her right now but she just isn't grasping it. We even bought some stuff from the pet store to drop on her pads to make her go there, and she doesn't like it.

I didn't like the crate either. What I did was to put my puppy in the bathroom. I noticed that she would potty in the same spot almost every time so I started putting paper on the spot. After a while she started using the paper. If you are working long days then you can't leave her unattended in the house. The bathroom is a good alternative to the crate. Just make sure everything including the waste basket and toilet paper are out of her reach. Don't forget to keep socks, undergarments, and washrags away too. Puppies tend to eat everything. One other helpful hint...When you take her out to potty continuously repeat potty until she pees or poops and then praise her "Good girl, good potty" Soon she will potty on command. I did this with my pup. She's more than a year now and will pee and poop on command. Good luck

Maybe you should have thought all of this through before you bought a puppy. Consistancy is the key. Either you want her to use the puppy pads/newspaper inside, or you want her to hold it and wait 13 hours to go outside. If you crate train, there will be many, many accidents if she is left that long - but just at first, until her bladder strengthens. If you'd rather not leave her in a crate, get an ex-pen and put it in the kitchen while you are gone. Put down newspaper/puppy pad at one end. Dogs like porous surfaces to pee on, so odds are in your favor of her peeing on it. The best thing, however, is to try to coordinate your schedule to be able to let the dog go potty outside. If you continue to let the dog pee on the paper, it delays the house training process that much more.

Get an exercise pen (you can get them at any pet store, they can be a bit costly) and cover the floor with pee pads. The ENTIRE area. Then she has a bit of space to walk around in, BUT it is her space and has a similar feel to a crate. They usually will go potty in a certain place. Slowly start taking some of the pads away and see if she'll keep going on that area. It's good to put the xpen in an area with hard floor, kitchen etc. Or you can get a shower curtain liner to put under it to protect your carpet. Good luck, and for future reference, don't get a puppy if you work that long of hours! It's HARD to housetrain.

She's lovely! I'm amazed she is going within the kennel. Her kennel will have to be simply gigantic ample for her to rise up and switch round in . Have you attempted getting up within the center of the night time together with her to take her out? Maybe she's now not ancient ample but to be competent to make it by way of the night time. Also, there may be the noticeable -- do not deliver her something to devour or drink after a special time within the night to reduce on her having to head.
