The front speakers must be in the front firing towards you. You can put the rears in back of you angled in toward you but the ideal is if you can place them parallel to you to the sides firing at you where you sit to watch the movies. This presupposes you have only 5.1. You can experiment with different subwoofer placements. Just be sure to have your phase, crossover, and gain settings set right.

You'll want the front 3 speakers as close to the TV as possible...Place you CENTER above or below the TV...Then place your LEFT and RIGHT fronts as close to each side of the TV as possible...The idea is that studios mix the movie soundtracks with the notion that all 3 front speakers will actually be BEHIND the screen...If you have a big screen TV, try setting all 3 fronts on the floor in front or on top.

For the rear, you'll want them on each side of you, not behind...A good rule of thumb, is if your FRONTS are 10 feet away, place your REARS 5 feet away...(2 to 1 ratio)...Whether you've got 2, 3 or 4 rear speakers, place them all (equally) half as far away from you as your fronts...If you DO have the "CENTER REARS" (or "Surround Back") (or "6th and 7th speakers"), then these DO go behind you.

The idea is to position the speakers to "fill" the room with sound. You don't want any of the speakers blocked by furniture, etc. But you don't have to "hang" them to work.

I have my rears on the end tables, my two small front on the sides of TV, the large on the top of TV, and the foofer to the side front.

You have to play with the sound you want, just remember do not block the speak with anything.

rear speakers are meant to be behind you, but many people put them on the outside of the front speakers and aim them out (to bounce off the side walls, trying to sound like they are behind you), if they can not run the wires behind them.

banana is correct about blocking the sound, with exception to the woofer. The woofer does not need a "line of sight" like the other speakers.
