Im trying to explain this phrase to my friend. What is an easier way I can say this to her?

It is similar to "We are as strong as our weakest link". The status quo brings superiority down. A society that does not look for and strive for superiority will only be mediocre.

There's a coffee mug in my house that says: "In the end old age and treachery will outsmart youth and vigor." Joking aside, people are jealous of you when you are more intelligent, beautiful, wealthy, etc. and they try to hurt you through gossip or other means. Picture what goes on in school and you'll get the picture. Good luck.

I interpret it as bringing some thing or body down to ones own level as opposed to striving to improve oneself.
