If your doc isn't worried, then I wouldn't be either.

If your sons weight as a baby is below average, then it will probably be below average as he grows up, goes through puberty, and becomes an adult. If you want him to be able to play sports and be active when he gets older, then you should follow the chart for body weight that a doctor gives you. When he is an infant, his body starts planning on how big he will be made when he gets older. This is why chubby babies may lose the weight for a couple of years through puberty, but when they get to their twenties, they become chubby again very easily. Their body structure is just naturally set up for them to be chubby.

Also, you should go by that 'stupid' chart , because even though the chart may change slightly (I know that the BMI chart does for teens and adults, I don't know about babies though), many smart minds work all over the country and the world to find out what is the healthiest human body weight.

Well the chart is a guideline. Your child would be in a certain percentile...like my daughter was in the 90th percentile which was no concern because she was 23 1/2 inches at birth and 9lbs 15oz. So it she was a normal weight for her height. You It is only when the child is way below or above their percentile that you should start being a bit concerned. It is not for vanity that you go by the chart but as an indicator for certain health problems. It is a way to curve obesity before it happens as well as many other problems. It is best to learn about problems as quickly as possible in order to solve them faster. However, if your child is only a few pounds over or underweight than it should not be a concern. As long as the child is continuing to lose or gain weight.

My son is 20 months old and weighs 20 pounds. My pediatrician, who is heaven sent, has been there by my side since the day Aidan was born. He says that as long as Aidan's head size and height are in an average percentile, then we have nothing to worry about, because Aidan is very healthy.
So, in my doctor's own words he says "Aidan is just making his own growth curve, he is unique." I assume you take your son to the pediatrician, so as long as his head size is normal, then all is well. DO NOT WORRY! The chart just goes by the average sizes and weights of all the children around the country, it is not a set standard that we have to live by.

i wouldn't worry about it to much. the wic people kept saying my baby was underweight but he is very healthy. he has been small since birth and now he is catching up. anyway as long as he is eating well and drinking and staying active i wouldn't worry about it. i agree that we should not have to go by a stupid chart. as parents we are really the only ones that know are children so if u fell that he is healthy and the perfect weight don't listen to anyone else.

Unless he falls beneath the 3rd percentile then he's fine. When they get below the 3rd then they are given a diagnosis of failure to thrive. The chart that is most important is the weight for length chart. If you have a child is way too large or way too skinny for their height then that is a probelm.

you dont need to worry about kids being underweight or overweight. Does he look heatly & happy & he eats??? If yes to these then dont worry. My daughter is 2 and is classed as overweight, she might be a little chubby but she eats heaps of healthy food and does alot of exercise and seems happy enought so I am not worried. You should be either. Height to Weight ratios are long out of date and she never be used. Good luck and hope this puts you mind at ease.

i think it depends on how off he is from the chart, it is just an average and if hes close say 5lbs one way or the other i wouldnt worry but if its more than that i would because they should be gaining to keep up their strength just get him some pediasur if hes over a year old and it will make sure he is getting the vitamins he needs to stay healthy

Ask your mother and mother in law what you guys were like at this age. My husband and I were skinny little kids. Not short, just skinny. So long as the pediatrician is not worried, you shouldn't be. Talk about his diet too. Some people, children included have faster metabolism's than other people.

my son has ALWAYS been under weight and height. a good friend of mine has a baby that is way over height and under in weight. they were telling her he should weigh 20 pounds at 6 months bc he was soo tall and he was no were near that. she fed him like she should and i do my son also. if you know that your son is eating enough then don't stress he is probably just active like my son. its just an average anyway.
