All you need is money.

What you need to pack depends on what you plan on doing. This time of year light clothes and sandals work well. Unless you plan on going out to really nice places to eat and drink, you don't need anything dressy.

Anything else you need you can buy, after all NY in one of the best shopping places in the country. Don't worry, just go.

It all depends on what type of trip you plan on having. Financially, the city can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Many tourists come and check out the monuments, museums, subways, and pizzerias. In which case you really don't need that much cash. However, if 5th Avenue, broadway shows, taxis, and fine dining is what you're looking for, then yes, bring a lot more.
For the most part there is a lot of walking, whether you take a cab or train. It gets really hot in the summer, and there is no shade, so you will want to bring sunglasses and sun screen if you have a tendency to burn. Along with whatever clothing/footwear you feel suitable for that long walk. It's not that easy to get lost as long as you know how to read a subway map, something you can probably pick up or print out.
Most people are always taking pictures so if that's your thing, you'll have the oppurtunity. And yeah, it gets pretty gross sometimes on public transportation so a little sanitizer could help if that bothers you. But there's a Duane Reade on every other block so you won't be deprived if you forget anything. Other than that, just pack light. There isn't much more you need.

Here's my big city packing list:

Comfy shoes like naturalizers or Easy Spirit. Nothing hurts like non-cushioned sandals on pavement and nothing looks as dorky or screams TOURIST as big white puffy sneakers with nice pants or a skirt.

Peppermint foot lotion or foot soak for tired feet at night

A foldable zip up nylon tote bag. Keep it in purse or pocket, and if you start buying things during the day, take it out and start filling it. Actually several of these are good for extra carry on after your trip.

Small camera. keep close in your pocket.

Close to the body purse with lock. snap, zip. Totes invite people to go fishing.

Really think about whether you NEED a cell phone. Its just something else to keep track of, and with tall bldgs, many carriers, traffic noise, and subway, you seldom have optimum service. Only way its handy is If you are going in a group and need to contact each other.

Check at borders or barnes & noble for a tiny pocket pop up map. They pop up and refold automatically to credit card size . I have one for Paris - invaluable! You can check it quickly & discretely, and pocket it so you dont look gawky and lost.

A tiny notebook for prices, addresses, notes, things you see and want to remember.

A zipper pouch for rec'ts brochures & ticket stubs. Save for expense tracking or to make a scrapbook when you get home.

One nice packable rayon or crushable travel dress. Check travelsmith.com. I had one that folded up the size of a mitten, and shook out perfectly. Wonderful for that unexpected nice dinner out. (also comfy flats to go with it)

One layer - sweater, rain jacket for cool or breezy tour days & evenings. Empire state bldg (eiffel tower) ferry to Statue of Liberty - nice eveining in Little Italy.

Tiny bottle of hand sanitizer - running your hands over railings, pushing traffic light buttons, holding a subway door. Icky anywhere. Give yourself a quick spritz before you buy that slice or street dog for lunch.

Ok - thats all i can think of - Bon Voyage!
