They didn't completely; you can still find a few products out there in glass.
Mianly, glass is out of favor b/c it's fragile, plastic is cheaper and lighter to haul, and people want a larger protion size than an 8 or 10 oz. glass bottle gives them.

Less breakage in the process.
Plastic is cheaper than glass.
Less weight to ship.
No breakage in the stores.
I still like the glass.

We still have pop here in glass bottles. Not as much as before but they can still be purchased.
