When I worked in a school for kids with multiple handicaps, we had a special way of dealing with kids with super high anxiety.
When the student was anticipating and worrying about what was to happen, or where we were to go, ahead of time, we would write a story to read a number of times before and during the event in order to calm the child down. -- We found that the emotions and behaviors of the children were calmer and noticably much more in control. Here is a sample story.
On Friday we will go to the store to buy a Slurpee. We will leave the school at 10:00, and ride the bus to 7-11. We will sit in our seats while the teacher gets off first, to talk to the person who works at 7-11. When our teacher says we can get off the bus, we will walk quietly to the steps of the bus, and get off. Before we can go inside the 7-11 store, we will line up outside the door to wait for every one to get there.
Mrs. B will open the door for us to walk inside the store. We will walk inside and look around at the things they sell there. We must keep our hands down by our side, and not touch, but we can look. Next we will take turns getting our slurpee. I wonder what colors and flavors they will have that day? I wonder which color you will choose? Every color has a different taste, Red, Orange, Purple, Blue, and Brown are the colors. I wonder which 2 colors they will have on that day.
When we get our slurpee we will stick a straw down to the bottom of our cup, then sip on the straw. The slurpee will be cold. and the Slurpee will be sweet.
We need to pay money for our slurpees. Remember to have money in your pocket to pay for the slurpee..............

ALOT of therapists will work with your child, and if you prefer not to use meds, just say so, and most will find a way. Your local Department of family services can be a big help too, as can school social workers. I am a nurse and there is a HUGE trend towards therapists treating without meds. If the first one won't do it without meds, move on and keep trying...it can be done. Some churches have great resources as well.
Good luck, and stick to your guns...no meds is always the best if it can be helped.

Well, I have extreme anxiety and what helps me most is simply talking about everything. You have to have a lot of patience and understanding for people with high anxiety. We think differently than most people and as parents, you have to help accommodate to what we want. It's not being selfish, it a need of some sorts. Also if you're child isn't very open, try therapy for them. They have a lot of tricks and ways to help your child relieve some of the anxiety. But sometimes medication helps, and it's something you should talk to a psychiatrist about and the will help you with your needs. And most of the time, medication is temporary.

Take the child to church and let the pastor pray over him\her. Maybe the child is living in a toxic household. Or maybe you can call the Dr. Phil show and he will dig deep into your life and find out the reason why this child is so nervous. Did that answer your question?

the doctor that gave you the diagnoses should tell you what to do or where to go and why did that doctor not give meds to start with.
