It's best to build a portfolio first. Start on little stuff, and create a deviantArt account or get a website or something to post your photos on. This will allow everyone to see what you can do. Also, copyright your images.

Here's an excellent example of a portfolio website. You can also Google search for more.

I don't know if it's possible for you to actually get work this young, but it's good that you have the drive. Starting a portfolio early would be to your advantage either way.

There are plenty of jobs for photographers in marketing, modeling, magazines, and other areas of the entertainment industry. It's a difficult industry to break into, but it yields limitless opportunities. Good luck.

Heinz, you've got to be kidding, advising a 12 year old to do weddings??? Doing pet shots for friends would be ok.

Perhaps your photos are pretty good, 85722. Nothing says a young person can't take a good photo. The catch is, you have to be able to take the same good photo every time, not just as a lucky happenstance. If your images are good enough to submit to publishers and have them accepted for publication, and they pay you for them, well, good for you! Have your parents set you up with a bank account and tax advisor and go for it.

Somehow, I doubt that will be the case. You have years before you have to be concerned about making a living. In that time, learn all you can about the craft of photography. Continue your education and mature as a person. If you can sell a few prints along the way that would be great. You can build a portfolio as you go.

Good luck to you.

At your stage, it would be worlds better for you to start working on a portfolio than an actual job. Take some time to contact local photographers and see if you can volunteer your time at their studio. Whether it's cleaning their camera room or dragging their equipment around when they need it. As you do this, watch them and pay attention to what they do. You'll pick up TONS of information this way. Also, convince mom and dad to buy a book or two that will help you get the basics of photography down.

There is a LOT more to building a photography business than just taking pictures. You have to have a keen business sence, understand local and state laws about copyrights, release forms, taxes, book keeping and malpractice suits. There is very little fun in it when you first start out. (which is why i suggest an apprenticeship first)

However - you can make a living solely on photography. About 95% of my income comes from my wedding photography alone and it's enough to keep me going for the majority of the year (from march - november).

At least eighty% of my time is spent walking matters, watching for brand new industry, responding to demanding situations, taking into account new ways, such a lot something you'll be able to feel of that firms do. That leaves 20% of my time for images. I do not get in anybodies face, however I am consistently available in the market sniffing for industry. I can flip any dialog toward images in normal approaches that provide me a way of whether or not there's an possibility there, or now not. I simply did a sequence of environmental pictures of metal staff on a prime upward thrust. I bought that thought to at least one man or woman and received permission to place up a bulletin at the website displaying that photograph and my touch information (I additionally needed to installed coverage, and so on.). These men are pleased with what they do and rightfully so, however what number of folks see them in movement? Their other halves understand they arrive dwelling soiled and worn out. People at the avenue understand that they may be able to be determined round lunch wagons. When a few of them noticed what I had performed, they desired portraits to exhibit them at paintings. 12 pictures got here out of that. Might make it a sideline for a number of professions. Assuming the talent set, it is all approximately earnings and shutting. I feel Cyano mentioned that, and it is actual. A very long time in the past, I wasn't employed for an challenge and I could not relatively recognize why. The buyer cherished my paintings and I used to be higher than who they employed. Not by means of a lot, the fellow who received employed used to be beautiful well, however a bit of bit. Why did not they rent me? I requested and can under no circumstances, ever disregard the reply 'They requested for the activity.' Ask and Ye SHALL obtain! Vance

You could offer taking pictures of peoples kids and pets. There is good money in that. ~
Check Walmart and Sears for prices they charge. Then do some jobs for people you know at low prices and use them for reference for later jobs. You could even do weddings, bar mitzvahs and such.
