I don't have access to a gym but I have a few yoga tapes. What are some other exercises I can do around the house?

If you want to lose weight with yoga, you need to get some Power Yoga or Vinyasa Flow yoga DVDs. These types of yoga workouts are much more cardiovascular - the key to losing weight. A nice, slow, Hatha yoga DVD is great for toning and relaxing, but not for burning any fat.

I do a lot of Power Yoga, but at home I'm also a big fan of the Dance Dance Revolution video game. Very fun way to burn calories!

It can, but it's very minimal. Yoga isn't a cardio workout, but SOME types of Yoga can be. There's a type that is done in a very hot room, I forgot what type it is, but that is the only type that will actually make you burn a lot of calories (by sweating them all out). But Yoga in itself is a very low impact workout, which is really meant for stress reduction and relaxation. I think I get a better workout doing Pilates, but even then, that's mostly stretching and working your core muscles.
If you really want to lose weight, you need to do a lot of cardio, running, walking, elliptical machines, bikes, that sort of stuff.

My experience is that yoga alone cannot help one lose weight. It may however help in giving proper shape to the body. For losing weight, besides yoga one has to be on the right kind of diet plus some light exercise like walking.

actually yoga can be more beneficial than doing things such as sit ups.

Yoga focuses on holding positions for periods of time building up strength, toning your muscles and working out the fat. It might be easier for someone who is not as "physically devoted" to a workout routine.

good luck

yoga can most definetly help you loose weight along with a healthy diet. for me, i do bicycles (lie on your back, bring right elbow up to meet left knee, then the same with the other side etc), boards, and sit ups to help me tone. hope this helped!
