IM 14 and my parents wont let me get a job. I really want one beacause I want to buy a new computer and they cant use their credit card cause their credit score sucks. I tried reasoning with them but thy are so closed-minded to letting me have one. Theyu say stuff like: "Your only 14 and you don't need to be working" when I make a valid point, they just say stuff like "Well it is a NO and thats final" I think that wanting a Job proves just how responsible I am, yet they act like If I actually started making money, It would be the end of the world. I tried taking online surveys but that doesnt earn much. I even started a pet-sitting buisiness and handed out like 100 flyers but no customers. I want to make the money, but I really want something more than lemonade stands and mowing lawns. I'm tired of people telling me about all these cliche ways to make cash in my situation. I need persausion tips. P.S. PLEASE!!!

Most (and for all I know, maybe even *all*) states allow a 14-year-old to work (and do not restrict it to farm work only), but you usually have to have a work permit, the hours that you can work are restricted, and you cannot work in jobs that are hazardous. You need to check your state laws for specific information. However, in the area that I live in most companies/stores will not hire a 14-year-old, even though they can. In part because there are so many restrictions.

But, as you already realize, you can’t work unless you get Mom and Dad to change their mind about allowing it. I think it’s wonderful that you want to work, but there are a lot of things that have to be considered such as transportation, your ability to maintain your schoolwork and other activities, etc. And, some parents simply feel that 14 is too young to work.

Can you even legally get a job at age 14 besides mowing lawns? Maybe it differs by state.

Anyway, let me share some persuasion tips that I used on my parents when they wouldn't let me get a job:

First, tell them you want a computer and you realize they can't buy you one. So what are you to do? Just forget about the new computer? Of course not. Thus, you need a job.

They will probably say you don't need a new one. Prepare valid reasons why you need a new computer, and not just because you want to play games or exchange email. Can you use it for school? What is in it for them, too?

They probably still won't let you get a job. So present them with this scenario:

You are 14. You realize you are still young, but you're beginning to mature. You have friends, you want to go out. You can always ask your parents for money, but that's being really dependent and spoiled. Also, they have the right to say no to you because it is their money. So what about if you want to go hang out with friends, but can't because you don't have money? If you have a job, you can be more independent, you can quit asking them for money for everything, and you can learn the value of earning money. Plus, you can get things that you need, such as a new computer.

It still may take some time, but prove to them that you are mature. Don't talk back, keep your room clean and act mature. After some time, if they don't realize your efforts, point it out. Show them you are mature for your age, which I think you are. It helps if you can raise your grades or show improvement in something they've been nagging you about. (This is how I got my parents to let me get a permit when I was 15.)

Also remember that the reason parents dont want you to have a job is because then you will become more independent from them and it's hard for a parent to let go. Be sensitive to that but also use it as a tool when arguing your point.

The only job you can work at age 14 is on a farm due to child labor laws.. Almost every place out there requires that you be 16 years old to be employed in in just about any industrialized work place. Restaurants, fast food places ,theaters, grocery stores, Etc....... And some places won't even look at you until your 18.. Auto mechanic, plumbers, A/C repairmen,roofers,steelworkers,Etc.....
I can respect the fact that you are being responsible enough to want to go out and earn money and to have a job. But right now, Your age is working against you. I really wish that there was something that i could tell you that could convince your parents. But that's not your only problem right now. I would however suggest that you call the county office and find out more about your local labor laws before you proceed any further . I hope this has helped you and i wish you well!!

I think it's pretty responsible of you to be willing to work to make money for your own stuff ( way to go) to many kids these days are lazy. tell your parents that by having a job it's teaching to be more responsible and also helps you learn to start managing your money. why don't you try to convince your parents to let you work maybe 2-3 days a week maybe for only 2 hours, prove to them you can do this while still keeping your grades up and keeping up with any choirs. Most importantly convince them this is just a start to you becoming a more responsible young adult.

look at my profile, and visit the site under "about me"...sign up there....here is some information about the site:

This is a site from which you are given the chance to earn money. What you have to do is complete surveys and offers for companies that want the public's opinion. By doing this, you are able to earn money very easily for simply giving your opinion or trying out sample products. This is a great service that allows one to work from home, on their spare time, at their leisure, and still bring in a nice sum of money every month. People have made up to $800 easily on this site by just working on it in their spare time. It is not going to replace a real job's salary, but it is a very nice bonus. There are also many features on this web site, such as contests and special surveys, from which you can redeem extra prizes that would be sent to you with your monthly cheque, such as iPods, Xbox 360s, gift certificates, and much more.

Cheques are sent monthly, and usually arrive about a week or a week and a half into the next month. No payment from you is ever required, not to sign up, not EVER. Unlike other sites that try to scam people out of their money, this site never requires you to pay them.

"If the site doesn't get paid from me, then why would they have this service going?" - The site doesn't get paid directly from you, but when you complete an offer or survey, they also get paid a small portion of what you earned yourself. For example, if you complete a survey about computers let's say, you would earn maybe $2 and the web site itself would recieve $0.50 from the company also for getting you to complete the survey. These surveys take little time at all, most taking up less than even 2 or 3 minutes of your time.

Fraud is also a big deal on the Internet these days, and this site recognizes that. That is why they ask for ONLY three bits of information: Your name, email address and your home address. Yup, that is all. No credit card information, no banking information, nothing like that. All they require is your name and address so that your cheque can be sent to your home every month. Your email address is only required to confirm that you have done the offers and surveys. Fortunately, no spam mail or junk mail is ever sent out by this site and your information is never shared with any other company.

Personally I have been a member of this website, along with thousands of others, for approximately 1 year now and have earned well over $2500 by working in my spare time. This web site has been great to me, also the members and administrator are very friendly, and are always there to help you with a question or problem you may be having. So far, I've listed only positives about this site, because I can't think of a single negative thing about it. Earn money in your spare time, at no cost to you...Simple!

Drop the dramatics, that is not a sign of maturity. The statement that they act like its the end of the world if you make money is childish. Sounds to me like you heard no and started pounting.

I admire your desire to make your own money, but you live under thier rules, but if you want then to see that you can handle this, handle your business. If your grades are not good, then get them up. Investigate the laws in your state about minors working. There are generally certain limitations. Have that information available when you talk to them.

When you talk to them, seek first to understand, then be understood and make that your main goal instead of convincing them to do what you want. Then take some time and think about it. Only when you fully think you understand thier position can you negotiate with them. And make it a negotiation, not a tantrum. But beyond that, you have to accept that they are the parents and you need thier permission to work. Your much more likely to get it if you act mature and responsible with them. They know you, none of us do and remember, if you do not agree, they are not trying to hurt you but provide you the best life they can. They are not your enemies, even if it feels that way.

A really easy way to make money online is to join GPT sites. GPT sites pay you to take surveys and do free trials. The minimum age requirement I have seen on most, is 13 years old. (So maybe you can be sneaky about it =P) They are free to join. I remember when I first starting doing GPT's, I made about $70 within the first hour. (and then I was hooked =P) Here are 2 of my favorites:

Or, just do a search on 'gpt site', and you will come up with a bunch. =)
Hope that helps.

Millions of single women live alone without being married, so disregard their religious reactionary instruction. Save up hard and move out ASAP - your parents are putting their own sad morals before their daughter's happiness - just leave ASAP. Whatever you do, go well prepared. The last thing you want to do is go back with your tail between your legs.

How about a Paper Route. See if you could talk them into a 2 week trial. In this time you have to get yourself up, dressed & fed every morning before your route. Allways finish up in time so your not late for school. As long as it wouldn't interfere with their schedules I can't see why they wouldn't at least give it a try. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do!
