Not unless they were a livery driver who makes serious tips with high end clientel. The medallion cab (yellow taxi) drivers don't make very much and that is after working long hours usually 6 days a week. To own your own medallion in New York is the only way you can work for yourself as oppposed to a company but since the current price for a medallion is going for about $400,000 obviously most are owned by companies.

I don't know the actual amount, but I had email correspondence with a man who worked 3 days a week as a taxi driver in New York and was a philosopher or some such thing for the remaining part of the week, teaching some thing to students etc. (not for money). So, it looks like they make good money. I live in India

Someone's having you. Cab drivers make about $40 to 50,000 a year, that's working six days a week, 12 hour days. Most of that is in tips.
