Is it true that you can file taxes in Florida even if you haven't worked, just by claming your children. A friend told me that in Northen states you can just claim your children even if you haven't worked for the year. I was wondering if this is true and if you can do it in Florida. Also, how many children can a single parent claim.?

There is no state income tax in Florida. So there is nothing to file. There is FEDERAL income tax, of which you have to file, even if you did not work for an entire year. You can only claim your kids if you worked.

You can file, and claim however many children you have, no matter what state you live in. But if you don't have any income, you won't get any money for claiming the kids, if that's what you're really asking. You wouldn't be eligible for earned income credit if you don't have any earned income - and the child tax credit won't give you anything either if you don't have any income, so don't have any tax liability. Those are the rules in all states, not just northern ones, or Florida.

"Filing taxes", and claiming children, doesn't mean you get money back, you know. Or maybe you don't know. But it doesn't.

This info is for federal income taxes. Florida doesn't have a state income tax.

There's no state income tax in FL. So you don't file a state return there at all. Your Federal return will be the same regardless of which state you live in.

BTW, your "friend" is pulling your leg.
